Season End Report Card
May. 31st, 2010 07:28 pmThe Vampire Diaries: A+
This is my favourite new show of the season. I really love this show. I love the main three who I am ridiculously OT3 about – I love Elena, Damon is awesome and I am surprisingly attached to Stefan (which is maybe the biggest surprise because I didn’t think I’d like him at first).
The supporting cast is excellent, the plot moves lightning fast, and it’s interesting and full of excellent acting as well as characters and character relationships I adore. Plus there have been so many wonderful awesome female characters.
Of course there are also some negatives, mainly, how they keep killing off all those wonderful female characters, long before their time, and what a waste that is (not to mention infuriating). But then it also means that it’s a show that has a lot of guest and reoccurring female characters who are awesome and it’s not like they have only been killing them off – the guys have been dying too. I’m hoping that next year has a little less killing off of female characters though. This is the show that I am most looking forward to next season. TPTB making me wait four months for the next episode is cruel.
Lost: A
It’s kind of hard to believe that the series is over. Overall I really enjoyed this final season and the final episodes. I don’t really have a lot to say that I haven’t already – there are a lot of things I wish had happened differently or at all but in the end it was pretty emotionally satisfying and... ♥
Fringe: A-
This season was excellent! I am loving the mythology of this show. I hope next season will move to deal exclusively with those types of episodes because the stand-alone ones are often less interesting. I also hope we get more Astrid and Astrid/Olivia interaction next season. I was surprised by the Peter/Olivia in the finale but I ship them so I’m excited to see where that goes especially since it’s now out there that they care for each other and thus all things keeping them apart will have to be external, and once those are gone we’ll hopefully be able to skip all the will-they-won’t-they. I am really excited about where they’re going with the other universe and Olivia’s powers.
In Plain Sight: A-
So this season is just over half-way through but I have been loving it. After not watching the show for a season and a half it’s now one of my favourites. I love Mary more than I ever have, I love Marshall and I love the Mary/Marshall partnership and UST. This show has joined my list of ‘happy no-thinking’ shows.
Doctor Who: B+
Six episodes into the season I can say that I am enjoying it and I can say wholeheartedly that Eleven is very much The Doctor, as much as any other, and I love him. But... the season thus far isn’t quite living up to my expectations. From the writer who wrote some of my favourite episodes and created some very loved characters (Sally, River, Jack) I admit I was expecting a lot.
He delivered with the first episode which I loved, and he won me over on the redesigned TARDIS in the second but I haven’t yet loved another episode. The two River Song episodes, 5x04/5x05, where pretty good though I preferred part one, the Dalek episode was pretty blah (but if I’d read the description beforehand I could have called it), the vampire episode was good but I didn’t love it, and while I liked the second episode on first watch it left a lot of questions that made me like it less upon further thought.
Then there is Amy who I loved in the first episode but since have gotten this feeling... like TPTB are trying to push her as the best companion ever/someone the Doctor loves so much and at only five episodes into her series I don’t think it’s earned and it’s kind of affecting my love for her. I don’t even know. Possibly this is how people who didn’t love Rose felt in series one and two? Except I do like her – I just hate feeling like TPTB are trying to force down my throat how awesome she is and how amazing the connection between her and the Doctor is, and it’s making me like her less. Hopefully this is an issue I can work past over the rest of the season.
Castle: B+
This was an excellent season and I’m still very much enjoying this show. I’m nervous about how they are going to deal with the Beckett/Castle relationship next season since I didn’t love what they did at the end of the finale but I’m going to trust TPTB. The Castle/Alexis relationship continues to be one of my favourites on tv. I love how much of a team Castle and Beckett and all the others have come to be after two seasons (though strangely only one year). This is very much a 'sit and enjoy and that’s it' type of show but I love it for that.
NCIS: B
Overall it’s been an okay season but like Bones one I’ve loved it less than previous ones. The Tony/Ziva relationship has been uneven (heavy early, non-existent later and what was with that episode with Tony being obsessed with another woman? What about Paris?) Ziva herself has been used unevenly (more episodes for her next year I hope).
They introduced a reoccurring female character to be a antagonist/love interest for Gibbs who I find I actually don’t like (though she wasn’t bad in the final episode). And at this point I’m tired of Gibbs background. It’s not only not a mystery but has at this point been over-mined. Let’s move on to another character.
On the positive side of things my love for McGee continues to grow, McGee/Tony has been wonderful, Fornell and Gibbs continue to also be awesome as is Abby. I still love all these characters.
Chuck: B
I did not love this season as much as I did the previous two – Buy More stopped working as well, Chuck/Sarah became really contrived, a serious lack of Team Bartowski – but I also really liked the whole Intersect 2.0 concept and the final couple episodes were pretty great. Now that everyone knows the truth I’m looking forward to them working together to solve the mystery of Chuck and Ellie’s mother’s disappearance, and all of them being spies together.
Bones: B
On the whole this is still a show that I really enjoy but this season wasn’t as wonderful as previous, and in the last handful of episodes there were two I didn’t like. The dragging out of the Brennan/Booth UST hit my lack of believability threshold this season with Booth actually confessing his feelings and Brennan backtracking. Next season either better put them together or drop the build up because I’m tired of it now.
Criminal Minds: B-
A show I’m still enjoying, for the most part, but less than in previous seasons. Something about the latter half of this season just felt a little off. I don’t know. The finale was okay but nothing really special. The gender issues have been getting to me more but I don’t know if the show has got worse on them or if I’m just more sensitive about it.
The Amazing Race: C+
To be honest this season was kind of blah. There was no team that I loved and not even really one that I was cheering to win. In the end it came down more to which teams I didn’t want to win. A positive I suppose could be that even though the team I wanted to win didn’t the team that did didn’t piss me off? (Or at least they didn’t in the final episode.) Hopefully next season will be better.
The Big Bang Theory: C
This season had a handful of episodes I really loved and lots of lovely moments but the gender fail has also gotten really bad and it’s making me tired. I still enjoy the characters but I wish they could have some different writers. The Leonard/Penny relationship was okay but post-break-up was pretty bad. I loved Bernadette but hated her off-camera break-up with Howard. Raj and Sheldon continued to be awesome.
