The Trail of the Missing Witness

+ Wow, this ended up being a surprisingly excellent Nancy/Ace episode. "We're not risking Ace's life. No." Aw. And then: "I couldn't lose you." ♥ I loved her desperately hugging him after they freed him and the way he hugged her back. I liked how long it lasted and how long she kept touching him after they broke apart. It took me a little by surprise how intense her reaction was.

But I also love the quiet tension between them now. Ace did not want her trading it for his life, and Nancy's tearful agony at doing it against his wishes (because his life was more important) was great. Then afterwards things are clearly not normal - Nancy's hopeful little smile at him (she got the box back) and him very obviously not looking back at her, and the way her smile falls, and it's not okay.

+ So on the Nancy/Ace shipper side of things Nancy choosing to go dark side, and compromising her everything by letting Everett go free, in order to save Ace was great. But beyond that I found the lead up to that choice kind of contrived. I appreciate that she took going against a professional hitman seriously but the way she immediately disregarded the possibility of telling Thom and then turned to Celia as her first option - eh. Nancy relying on a new resource makes sense with how she immediately started using Ryan after she learned the truth but Celia, and the cost of going to her, is a completely different ballgame. You could say that Nancy was so desperate to protect Ace that she panicked and picked the first option that she thought would work, and I guess it's semi-believable, but it still feels off to me. Like the show pushing the characters in a direction in service of the plot.

+ Letting West leave with the list was such a bad choice. It's implied everything is fine when Nancy returns with the box but I'm not buying it. Especially since West specifically noted that they broke the encryption which means anyone could read the names and write them down. West, Celia, anyone working for Celia. There is no way those names aren't out there.

It was so irresponsible for Nancy (and Ace) to accept that Celia got the box back, that West was 'taken care of' but not murdered (???), and that the names wouldn't get out. WTF? You let it leave your sight with all the names easily readable - call WitSec, or Thom, and tell them all those people are compromised, immediately! They made no attempt to obscure or protect those names. This is going to bother me so much and I am really annoyed with the show.

Like West obviously read the names/made a copy. If you assume he wasn't killed by Celia's people than what did they do with him? Does he still have access to internet/phone? Still a danger. Then of course there's trusting freaking Celia Hudson which is such a hard no. Of course she, or her minions, read the names too.

I'm 100% sure that the Hudson's are involved with The Road Back. They really almost have to be, right?

+ I'm honestly surprised that Daniel West left them alive. Not sure why he would. He's a hitman, they're in an isolated location and they know too much (including the names on the list, and all that info he spilled about The Road Back.) Killing them would have made far more sense. (Unless maybe he had orders not to?)

+ Nancy casually revealing that Redgate was a farm shut down after she uncovered a nature cult in 10th grade was great.

+ I loved Grant's reaction to meeting his dad for the first time. Great acting in that scene by Shannon Kook. I loved that Grant made sure to learn how to say "Hi, I am Grant" in sign for their second meeting so he could introduce himself properly to his father. I liked their hug and Thom's sad lost expression when Grant turned away from him to say bye to Ace, and the Ace/Grant hug.

+ I am disappointed by Grant being around for really only one real episode before leaving again. I mean I'm sure we'll see him again but they set up his existence so slowly and well that his actual appearance ended up feeling lacking in comparison.

+ I liked Nancy's little talk with Grant and her telling him that what he wanted mattered too.

+ I liked Nick figuring out who the Saint was by himself.

+ I loved the reveal that all the paper trail proof of the Hudson's various murders and cover-ups leads straight to Ryan. Of course Everett is the kind of guy that would use his teenage son as a potential patsy, though I'm a little surprised that Celia was apparently completely in step with Everett doing so. Still I like how this ties their hands from this particular angle of attack in a believable way.

+ I liked the reveal that Odette has been hanging out with George's sisters when she goes to sleep and helping them with their homework.

+ Bess/Odette still feels like it's happening too fast but I liked that little moment between them.
