The Reason They Died
• You know for the second last episode of the show, and one that purports to give us answers, we didn’t really learn anything we hadn’t already know. Even Jack being the one to decide to take Jacob’s place wasn’t a surprise. Most of what Jacob told his Candidates was stuff we learned in the previous episode (and in fact we still know more than the Candidates do). The only thing in that conversation that we did learn is that the names being crossed off didn’t actually mean that the person was no longer a Candidate. Well, okay, I suppose Jacob’s exact reason for picking these specific people was new though the reasons are ones that have been worked out from what we know.
He chose them because – "I didn't pluck any of you out of a happy existence. You were all flawed. I chose you because you were like me. You were all alone. You were all looking for something that you couldn't find out there. I chose you because you needed this place as much as it needed you." So Kate was crossed off because she became a mother (not because she became ineligible) and thus presumably no longer alone and unhappy? I do have to wonder at how he chose since he visited some of them as children – how did he know all the way back then that they would be Candidate material?
• “This is why I’m here. This is what I’m supposed to do.” – Jack. This actually makes me a little sad because I honestly feel like its Locke who was supposed to be Jacob’s replacement. This is what John Locke was supposed to do and supposed to be.
• “I think you’re mistaking coincidence for fate.” – Elsewhere Jack. So this Jack has decided to go back to denial then? I mean considering all the coincidences that he’s been hit with since his return to LA on Oceanic 815 I can’t believe he could say that with a straight face. His unknown half-sister, whose name his lawyer had but who she couldn’t find, was on the same plane to LA with him? The guy in the wheelchair he meets at the airport ends up in his OR? When researching the same guy’s past he runs into another guy that was on his flight and who ends up being able to help him? I feel like I’m missing a connection or two here but even with ‘just’ those three – isn’t that enough?
• I really liked Jack in this episode but I loved him during that short conversation with Sawyer. Sawyer who is just so broken now and Jack knows it (but how couldn’t you) and more he understands it and he tries to help Sawyer with his guilt. First by telling him “I’ve been wrong before.” and thus ‘no, you weren’t wrong to not trust me’. And then second by telling Sawyer firmly “No. He killed them.” That compassion he showed was wonderful.
• This episode has made me pretty certain that Jack’s ex-wife and David’s mother is going to be Juliet. I just feel it. David has blue eyes that remind me of Juliet, we still have the Juliet/Sawyer meeting Juliet spoke of before her death (they have to give it to us) and it just feels right. It feels right (and would have more meaning then main Jack’s ex Sarah being the mom) and I’m thinking the show will actually do it. Here’s hoping.
• The short Jack/David/Claire scene at the beginning made me aww. I’d actually forgotten that Claire was staying with them so it was a nice surprise when she popped up.
• Speaking of Claire – where the heck was she during this episode? She appeared to be tagging after ‘Locke’ when we saw her last but there is no sign of her when he arrives at the main Island. Did he leave her on Hydra Island or did he kill her? For some reason I just don’t think he killed her. The way he held her when the others left on the sub, the way he answered her question (on where he was going) instead of killing her... It almost feels like he’s fond of her in some way. Perhaps he’s sent her off on a separate mission?
• There were three ‘deaths’ this episode though only Zoe’s is I think for sure. Charles was so smug that he’s always several steps ahead of Ben that I can’t help but wonder if it doesn’t mean that he was wearing a bullet proof vest. When Ben confronted Charles off Island oh so long ago there was the implication that they couldn’t actually kill each other (rather like Jacob and Smokey, in fact) and so it makes me wonder just how true that is? Could Charles still be alive because of that (and Ben knows it)? Richard was the other ‘death’ but I’m not sure. Can Smokey kill Richard? Jacob is still around which makes me think that Richard is still immortal and while we saw him flung off screen we didn’t see him die. I think of the three he’s the most likely to have survived.
• I feel like Alex being brought up again has to have been for some reason. What was she saying to Miles? Ben thanked Richard for burying her but he very purposefully didn’t say anything to Miles and that’s probably because he’s too afraid of what Alex would say. But I want to know so I hope that it’s brought up again. Perhaps Ben is going to kill someone (Sawyer?) and Miles interjects with a message for him from Alex – ‘I forgive you’? – and it convinces Ben to stop?
• “He doesn’t get to save his daughter.” – Ben. Ouch. The way he said it and the bleakness on his face – he meant it. And yet this is Ben and he is a master manipulator (... in this reality). I don’t think he actually is planning on killing off the others. I think he’s working to defeat Not!Locke and Zoe and Charles were collateral damage (and in Charles a happy collateral) in his effort to have Not!Locke trust him. .
• I was definitely seeing some Ben/Danielle happening in their scenes. I loved her line “I insist, even if we have to kidnap you.” Heh. It does feel a little... perverse considering what happened between them on the Island and yet at the same time it feels right. Alex’s mother and father, together, and the three of them becoming a happy little family. It’s... nice.
• I don’t know why Not!Locke told Ben that he was planning to destroy the Island. Wasn’t the way he was keeping Ben on his side by promising him the Island when he left?
• “You can still be my date if you want to.” – Miles. Oh, that’s totally teasing the shippers there. Doesn’t Miles have a girlfriend though? I’m pretty sure he does and that I wanted to know who. Maybe we’ll find out at the concert? I hope so. I want it to be someone we already know though.
• I really hope that all of our Oceanic characters meet up at the concert. I mean we know some who will be there – Jack, Desmond, Kate, Miles, Charlotte, Pierre – as well as potentially Daniel, Eloise, Charles, Penny, Juliet, Hurley, Libby, Sawyer, Sayid – and I’m hoping other characters like Claire and Charlie, and Locke, Helen, Ben, Danielle, Rose, Bernard will also be there. I just want everyone there. How awesome would it be if the show brought back characters like Eko, Boone, Shannon (meeting Sayid and connecting)? The answer is – very. Please, give that to me show.
• “No, she’s not ready yet.” – Desmond. Yet! Desmond said ‘yet’ which means that at some point in the future she presumably will be ready to learn the truth, and which in turn leads to the idea that Desmond is planning on telling everyone who was on the Island the truth of what happened. Yay! I find that so awesome. There are so many story/fic potential in that. I was so happy when it was revealed that it was Ana-Lucia who was driving the truck, and even more happy to see Hurley not only working with Desmond (as a sort of equal) but having clearly remembered everything from the Island. The only way it could have been better is if Libby had been with him. Oh, that would have been awesome.
