The Nice Guys
May. 2nd, 2021 08:36 pmIt was okay.
+ It started off quite badly for me with the boy looking at the Misty's playboy centrefold then her crashing the car and ending up dying in his backyard while naked. There was absolutely no reason for her to be naked. I liked him covering her with his shirt. It was a nice moment of him having started the scene ogling her and ending it treating her with respect and seeing her as a person. But it didn't need for her to be naked to hit that same point. Have him hold her hand and reassure her as she dies. Having her be naked as she dies is the film trying to have the boy treat her as a person while not bothering to do it itself. So yeah, bad start.
+ This movie does a lot of women as set dressing which is something I hate but I especially hate when it's naked women as set dressing.
+ My other big issue with this was with Holland March. Specifically with the little story Holly tells about what happened to her mother. Holland couldn't smell gas in their house because of his nose thing but for some reason decided his wife's repeated assertions that there was a smell weren't important because... ??? He didn't respect her? He didn't think she was smart enough to know what gas smells like or that he (presumably as a man) knew better eve though he couldn't smell anything? It put me off him really hard. He became a drunk out of grief and guilt, and damn he should feel guilty. I wish we'd had a scene of him opening up to Healy about what happened.
All that said I didn't dislike the film.
+ Holly was great. I loved her saving Amelia at Sid's party. I loved her compassion with the dying blue-faced man even though he had just been trying to kill her. I loved that she clocked John Boy as the assassin and got him at gunpoint. I loved her attempt to save the guys from Tally first with the waiter deception and then with the thrown coffee. I loved her getting the film from tally. She was smart, surprisingly crafty, competent, brave, and compassionate. I loved her.
+ I liked the relationship between Holly and her dad.
+ I liked Jackson Healey's combination of actually being a stand-up guy who wants to the good/nice guy while at the same time acting in violent ways, being dodgy and killing people. I like that he wants to be better than he is, and that he is better than he thinks he is.
+ Healy's relationship with both of the Marchs worked for me.
+ I liked that Healy and March ended the film opening up their own detective agency together.
+ There were a bunch of bits of humour that did work for me. I also enjoyed the hijinks aspect.
