Good episode.
+ Okay, Vivian Capshaw had me fooled. Just like everyone else I bought her regret and anger. It surprised me a little how subdued she was but I bought it. I love this reveal. Such a great twist. Martin's words to Ainsley earlier in the episode are absolutely (also) about Vivian. That who she's always been and I like the different perspective this gives the character. I loved her showing 'tells' to throw Malcolm off the truth by making him have to uncover a different truth. That was so smart on her part and she played it so well. Played him so well.
So she's going full Misery on Martin, yes? Cause I find that kind of hilarious and I can't wait to see how that plays out. I wonder how the heck she managed to catch him? I wonder if we're going to get Ainsley realising something is wrong first and bullying a still angry and betrayed feeling Malcolm into helping her? Are they going to rescue Martin? Last season Ainsley unexpectedly killed Endicott and the obvious direction to go is for her to kill Vivian to rescue her dad, or for the two of them to kill her together, which makes me think: what if Malcolm kills her? They've been flirting with Malcolm and killing the entire show and it would certainly make a shocking finale.
+ I actually really enjoyed Jessica and Vivian bonding over Martin screwing them over. No one suspects Vivian yet so I'd love if she and Jessica became friends (perhaps on her part to keep on eye on everything?) ... oh, wait. If this happens I just thought of an even more shocking finale - Jessica kills Vivian! Let everyone in the family be a killer.
+ We still don't have a reason for Martin's message or his cryptic justification that he's doing it for the family. I wonder if it's about Ainsley. Like he knows she needs a 'mentor' to keep her from losing it/getting caught as a budding serial killer. I can see how in Martin's mind that would be 'for the family' - helping Ainsley be her best self, preventing her from getting caught which would have a terrible affect on the lives of all the Whitly's. I hope that gets answered this season.
+ I have been deeply annoyed all season by the lack of Ainsley/Martin and that neither of them have reached out to each other. It really sat wrong with me. So the reveal that Martin did in fact reach out, that they've been chatting on the phone and she's been secretly visiting him is awesome. I liked the few short flashbacks we got and really hope we get more. I think we need more to build Ainsley/Martin more before we finally get another Ainsley/Martin/Malcolm scene.
+ Hard LOL to this exchange:
Martin: It's hard being misunderstood.
Ainsley: Everyone knows exactly who you are.
Martin: Okay so it's hard being understood.
+ Ainsley's almost smile when Malcolm said "you're the child he always hoped for" was very telling and he totally missed it by being distracted. That feels like it's going to be a massive mistake. I wasn't sure which way Ainsley was leaning during that scene - was she following Martin's advice or was she being sincere with Malcolm? I don't think the smile is definitive either way - especially for someone who felt so overshadowed by her brother, who was always second to her brother for their father's interest - but it does have me leaning a certain way.
+ Malcolm finding his fav batman toy in his dad's Plan B plane and how affected he clearly was made feel for him.
+ I loved Gil being protective of Malcolm and getting genuinely mad at Marshall Ruis over her implying Malcolm doesn't care.
+ The little moment between Gil and Jessica at the prison where he put his hand over hers and she put hers over his made me aww. It was very sweet. I also liked Gil wondering if he shouldn't have gave Ainsley more attention and Jessica reassuring him there's nothing they could have done, and it just felt so domestic and co-parenty in a way.
+ I liked Jessica and JT bonding. That was an unexpected pairing but it really worked.
+ Marshall Ruiz messing with Malcolm (and Gil) during their first meeting amused me.
