The Last Weekend

+ I'm very curious about what the plan going forward was going to be. Were they really going to kill Martin off? That would certainly be a massive shake-up and it could be interesting to explore Malcolm post-his father's death but at the same time I have a really hard time buying it.

+ I loved this exchange because of how raw and honest it is:

"What are you thinking about." - Martin
"You. Always you." - Malcolm

For Malcolm it always comes back to his father.

+ "I need you to hurt this person. Please. I'm asking as your son." I actually loved this. Malcolm manipulating his dad to get him to help save the girl and Martin's smile and the way he cups Malcolm's face was great. I love that it worked. Martin's reactions afterwards and Malcolm's expression watching that was also great.

+ Malcolm was restless and seemed upset as he listened to his father torture Don but his hands not shaking implies some very interesting things. Upsetting things but something I'd have loved to seen explored.

+ It definitely feels appropriate for Malcolm's first 'kill' to be his father. Poor Malcolm.

+ Probably the most shocking thing was Martin declaring "I was a good father but you were never a good son", Malcolm realising that Martin is going to kill him and Martin actually trying to stab Malcolm. Martin is obviously a psychopath but I 100% bought that he genuinely loved Malcolm and I have a very hard time buying that he would ever kill Malcolm for any reason. He's never been able to kill Malcolm before and I just don't buy it in this situation.

+ Which led to me wondering if Martin's plan was to force Malcolm to kill him. That he knew he absolutely could not return to prison so he decided to make Malcolm think he was going to kill him in order to force him to kill Martin in turn. Being killed by his son does seem like a death Martin would approve of. Plus using it as a means to force Malcolm to be a killer (and mess with his head one last time) also very much fits Martin. Killing Malcolm? Nope.

+ In a similar vein was Malcolm actually trying to kill his father. He seemed so shocked at the end and he didn't try and stem the bleeding so that would argue perhaps yes, but Malcolm has stabbed his father before and I can't help but wonder if this wasn't a very violent attempt to save his father? Like stab him so he can't keep attacking Malcolm, stab him so he's down on the ground and helpless when the police with their guns arrive.

+ For all that Malcolm would insist that he doesn't trust his father I think he proved at the end that he actually does, or at least he does with his own life. Because if Malcolm didn't trust him he wouldn't have turned his back when calling 911 in front of him. He knew his father wouldn't attack him.

+ I was surprised and rather aggravated that it wasn't Ainsley who showed up at the end to ask in a shocked and disbelieving voice "What did you do" and Ainsley Malcolm had to face while standing over their father's body. Like WTH?!? This is so obviously how it should have played out, at least to me. Why have Malcolm face Dani first (who has no connection to his dad or care for him) instead of being forced to face his little sister, who so recently started bonding with her father and who he's already worried has psychopathic tendencies? She was even there on the scene! I don't understand why it wasn't the obvious direction to go for the writers but it's left me feeling a bit resentful, tbh. It did basically hightlight one last time my biggest and longest standing annoyance with the show - how it too often sidelines Ainsley and her place in the story.

+ "It’s going to take more than two martinis and Valium to take me down. That’s breakfast in the Whitly family." I love Jessica so much.

+ I loved Jessica's fight with Vivian and that when Gil broke in and said "I meant for her sake" it didn't come off as a joke because Jessica was furious and kicking ass, and honestly I think she would have killed Vivian.

+ I loved Jessica entrapping Vivian but the best part for me was Gil's involvement. He saw that she was going to do something crazy and this time he helped her and they worked together to get evidence against Vivian and it was great.

+ I'm pleased that Gil and Jessica ended in such a good place. That last little moment between them with him cupping her face and her holding his wrist was so wonderfully intimate, I loved it.

+ Vivian was so damn delightful in the previous episode that this one ended up being a little bit of a letdown? I guess I would have liked for her to be a little more over-the-top during her confrontation with Jessica.

+ I liked the little moment where Jessica reveals she watches Ainsley's reports (and thinks she's the station's best reporter) and Ainsley's all surprised but in a very pleased way.

+ Dani showing up at the end to ask disbelievingly “What did you do?!” didn't work for me at all. I have a hard time seeing Dani reacting like that, tbh. She hates Martin, she wants Malcolm to be free from him, she knows how dangerous Martin is... I feel like her focus should have been more worried about Malcolm and if he was okay.

+ Oh dear god, the blond + the beard and that hair is just so terrible. Malcolm is absolutely correct that he looks ridiculous.

+ I liked Ainsley getting through to the sheriff via her daughters.

+ I'm glad that we got to see Edrisa one last time even if it was just a short throw-away scene.
