The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher
Jun. 6th, 2021 04:23 pmI enjoyed it.
+ I liked Kara and Simon and Uncle Earl. I liked the banter between Kara and Simon, and I loved the sweetness between Kara and Earl.
+ I liked a lot that when the museum taxidermy animals came alive they acted to protect Kara and attack the intruder. It was unexpected but also weirdly sweet. Little Kara loving Prince and him ending up saving her from the willow possessed otter and then looking up, waiting for her return was really sweet. I liked that this strange little museum of oddities ended up being a good place.
+ I think this may have been the first novel I read where the main character was in fandom. Fandom is not a hobby that you come across often. It was a little weird but also kind of delightful to read her thinking about fic, shipping fights and ranting about getting basically anti-ish messages on her fic. I was very pleased that she was obviously not an anti and her raging against their nonsense was great. It made me think that Vernon clearly wrote/does write fic (beyond that one Susan fic I read) and I’m sad I don’t know her AO3 pseudonym.
+ I liked the willow world and the creepy horror of it. I'm still thinking about the unanswered questions - who created the bunkers, were there people in those concrete parking garages, what are They and why do they change people, did Bible and Singer survive and escape, etc.
+ Kara and Simon were really dumb. I too would have checked out the alien world but I would have prepared first! Heading off to explore the other islands, going ashore, without leaving a very obvious marker behind was just so stupid.
+ It was very obvious from the moment she found the otter carving that it was behind the hole between worlds and the fact that Kara took so damn long to realise it was a little frustrating. I don't think Kingfisher was trying to make it a surprise reveal or anything but it was still frustrating.
+ Kara and Simon lucked the hell out beyond popping up in a bunker. By finding the UNA bunker with its messages and bible and then finding poor Sturdivant to give them some very important information they would have been so dead.
+ I found myself wishing that they had left their own messages before closing the hole. Write down the information needed to survive and plaster it all over the bunker. Maybe leave some supplies. They know people end up there so why not?
+ I like the way she writes pets. The cat – Beau – felt very real just like the dog in The Twisted Ones did.
+ I find myself wanting The Hollow Place to become a basis for fusion fic. How would characters from various canons handle the willow world? Or two groups from two different canons meeting up there and having to try and survive together.
