The Nevers 1x02 Thoughts

I'm enjoying the show.
+ This was such a great episode for Amalia/Penance. I love Penance's protectiveness of Amalia. I love how they work together so well. I love Amalia taking Penance's hand to prevent her from leaving with the others and how Penance immediately curls up against Amalia in the bed, their hands clasped tightly together between them. I love that even though Penance had to have a lot of serious questions and yelling she wanted to do she asked "lets just be alive for awhile" instead. That she just wanted to cuddle with Amalia and silently let the relief that she was okay settle. I loved this:
Amalia: She's nothing like me, she's wonderful.
Penance: How are you not wonderful?
+ That final confrontation between Amalia and Maladie had so many interesting pieces to it:
- "I do have a mission. I didn't ask for it. I'm not cut out for it. But it matters. And it requires sacrifice." Interesting. She clearly knows a lot more than anyone else about what is going on with the Touched and I want to know how.
- Amalia says her last sentence while looking at Mary and that + her rant to Desirée makes me think Mary is very important. She gives hope to the Touched.
- I love Amalia's 'shoot myself' solution to being between a rock and a hard place.
- "The mission needs them. Not me."
- I love the expression on Amalia's face when Penance was revealed and the way she can't look away from her. I love how she looks at Penance after she says "but it matters" and I love that regardless of her mission she wasn't willing to sacrifice Penance to it.
- I love the reveal of history between Amalia and Maladie. I love the hints we got - of Amalia choosing her mission over Sarah and leaving her in a terrible situation. I love Maladie's very personal anger towards Amalia but especially how her anger and desire for revenge and to hurt Molly is mixed up with their past friendship and love. She was so upset when Amalia shot herself. As she says she can't hurt Amalia if she leaves her but I think that desire had to have started with a great depth of feeling before everything. Amalia shooting her is certainly not going to be helping her sense of betrayal! I'm very into their relationship and seeing how this plays out.
- Then there's Annie and her expressions during that last scene. When Maladie says to Amalia "but we know you" the camera switches to Annie and what I got from it was that she does in fact know her. Then we had her almost enthralled expression when Amalia was giving her speech. In both instances it felt very much like she was waiting with baited breath for - something from Amalia. Then of course there's Annie stopping Maladie from killing Amalia. This is another relationship that I'm interested in learning more about.
+ Amalia having a mission she's willing to sacrifice her life for + that she seems to be more knowledgeable than most even if she's keeping it secret + this not being her true face makes me wonder if Amalia/Sarah isn't who she really is. Could she instead be one of the aliens from the spaceship? Left on Earth to guide whatever plan the Touched are a part of? Perhaps an alien consciousness that took over the body of the dying Sarah?
+ It was very small but that little exchange between Amalia and Horatio when he's taking her pulse and gentle rubs a finger across the back of her hand and she curls her fingers in, and then he puts her hand down with touch as they exchange a look really worked for me. Probably I'm reading too much into it but it made me go hmmm.
+ I liked the exchange of looks between Penance and Lucy after they were handed the ribbons to wear.
+ I love how Penance casually locked down the workshop without stopping what she was doing.
+ I liked Desirée little smile when Amalia said she'd see her at home.
+ Lavinia's talk of war sounds very similar to what Lord Massen was saying which makes me wonder if they're secretly working together. Or, the way she said 'we' during her scene with Amalia made me wonder if she desperately wants to be Touched and is using the doctor's experiments to find how out how to get her own Turn, while setting up to fight a war between the Touched/her people and everyone else?
+ The Lavinia reveal also made me wonder if we aren't going to get a face heel turn from Lord Massen. With their most powerful supposed ally potentially their greatest enemy it fits that their most obvious political/long reaching danger could become a great ally. His daughter was Touched and something about what happened to her turned him against them but I feel like it could also lead him to allying with them later.
