The Nevers 1x03 Thoughts

+ The opening scene was excellent. I loved everything about Amalia/Penance. Loved the bickering and Annie's exasperation about it. I loved Amalia's gentle amusement at high Penance and how touchy-feely they were with each other. I loved Amalia and Annie and this moment of connection and the little almost smiles:
Amalia: I do still want to kill you a bit.
Annie: Go ahead. But I'm not covering for you when she finds out.
+ I guess there wasn't something more between Amalia and Annie which I thought based on Annie's expressions in the last episode.
+ Amalia/Penance continue to be delightful. I loved Penance going over and wrapping Amalia in her arms at the end and how they spent the whole scene in each others arms. I loved that Amalia immediately pushed Penance down before running to Mary. And then of course the opening scene with them was so good.
+ Amalia vs the Beggar King's water-Touched minion was terrific. Loved it. Great use of a Touched ability to create a really interesting fight. I like how she used his power against him. I loved how bad-ass Amalia is.
+ I loved Annie showing up at the orphanage at the end with a bunch of Touched. After such a big loss that was a great moment of almost triumph.
+ Poor Mary. I liked her and I wish she'd stuck around longer.
+ Considering that Amalia started the episode telling Annie that they have enemies everywhere, enemies they don't even know about, you'd think she'd have tried to take some basic defensive precautions at the park. There was absolutely no attempt made to protect themselves. Definitely a failure on the part of a soldier and a leader.
+ Every Touched that hears Mary sing is enthralled and moved, it's beautiful to them. Except Myrtle. When Mary was singing in the park she seemed upset and even disturbed. Considering her Turn to understand any language I wonder what Mary was actually singing about? Is her power actually a mind control one?
+ The scene where everyone interrogates the woman who was fronting the faux orphanage was a really good scene. What she did was so awful and seeing how much it affected everyone in the room made it feel even worse. Poor Lucy! What a terrible and traumatic way to discover your Turn.
+ The reveal that Amalia and Horatio had an affair in the past made me go 'aha!' I knew there was something there. But what I liked even more was the reveal that Horatio has known her for years. He knows her. He knew her when she was Molly, he knows what happened with Sarah and he doesn't blame her for it. When she states that she's a killer he returns that "You're a soldier which makes me think that he knows what her mission is. I want more backstory.
+ My guess for the sequence of events: post-spaceship 'Molly' ends up in the asylum Sarah is in; they bond and plan to escape together; Horatio works there and is part of the plan; something goes wrong and Molly chooses to escape, leaving Sarah behind; Molly changes her name. Lucy and Penance know Amalia best so she probably met, saved?, them first.
+ "When I meet someone the first thing I think of is how to kill them." A part of being a soldier I assume? A soldier for what is the question.
+ The scene in the kitchen was interesting because as soon as people saw Amalia the uncomplicated joy died and people became wary. Meanwhile nothing in Amalia's demeanour or how she subsequently spoke indicated that she angry or upset. So there's this automatic distance between her and most of the people under her care. We've seen them cheering for her before, I think there's awe, and their safety (and happiness in that safety) very much relies on her but she's a very distant figure for most of them I guess. The great and powerful Mrs. True. They don't know her goals or why she's protecting them, she's not warm and welcoming like Penance or even Lucy. It'd be nice to see this change over the season.
+ I know the answer is because it's TV but Amalia and Lucy not exploring the rest of the house or looking for more documentation than was right in sight bothers me so much!
+ Frank not being killed by the machine gun fire was very plot armoury.
+ I still don't really care about what's going on with Hugo.
+ The female nudity on this show is too much. It's beginning to annoy me and seeing the occasional male butt cheek does not make all the boobs less gratuitous.
