In Plain Sight 3x04 & 3x05 Thoughts

• I was eagerly awaiting Marshall learning about the break-up and it ended up being very low key but well done. I liked his reaction upon seeing the absence of her ring and I thought the car scene where it’s actually brought up was really well done. I loved Marshall being left without words upon the confirmation of their break-up. It’s like his brain just stalled. It was amusing.
• I’m not sure about Marshall erasing Faber’s call at the end. Is it jealousy or him protecting Mary (who just got her heart broken)?
• I’m pretty fond of Steven Webber so it was great having him on the show as FBI Agent Mike Faber. I loved how he really likes Mary and by the end respected her. I loved their bickering and one-upmanship. The scene where he talks about becoming his father was excellent. I loved that he asked her out on a date and then called her the next day (?) even though she’d turned him down. I really hope we see him again. I love Mary/Marshall but I would love for Mary to have a fling with Faber. They have a really great chemistry.
• Faber’s description of Earl as – “He’s prickly, opinionated and smart.” – had me immediately thinking ‘so a male version of Mary then?’ because that pretty much is Mary’s description there.

• Mary/Marshall were lovely. Favourite moments include:
- “No, I don’t need back up. Yes, I appreciate your telepathic offer.” during the talk about Rafe moving out. Aw. I loved him knowing that there was something else going on with Mary after she slept with Rafe, he knows her so well, and her irritation about it (“It’s like you rent a room in my head.”)
- I loved him being so ready to back Mary even if it cost them their jobs (and Mary’s line about him not because “If you get fired too I’ll have no one to move in with and mooch off of.”)
- And then there was this exchange between them and Dom over betta fish:
“Pretty.”
“And vicious.”
“Sound familiar?”
“Thanks.”
I loved how Mary’s thanks isn’t sarcastic but is accompanied by a smile.
• Oh, and I loved Marshall’s “If he knows you’re alive trust me he wants out of the country.” after the bombing. Heh.
• I like Marshall’s continuing interest in origami. I wonder if he’s going to start giving Mary little origami figures as gifts?
• The Mary/Rafe goodbye was sad and Mary’s breakdown worked for me. So did them sleeping together. I was however surprised that it was Mary at the end who put a stop to it. Rafe came into the house like he still lived there and went immediately for a kiss and I would have thought he’d have been the one with the sense to put a stop to it. He did acknowledge how bad an idea it was as soon as she brought it up though.
• The mention of Brandi’s disappearance/trip in the same episode as Mary brings up her father in her opening voiceover pretty much confirms for me that Brandi is in contact with their father (though I’ve thought this since the beginning).
• Stan stepping up for Mary and Marshall at the end was really nice and I liked Mary’s “I love knowing why I love you.” complete with kiss but I did feel sorry for Theresa who was only trying to do her job.
• I also felt very sorry for Dom. His story was horrible – basically everything about it was horrible (his uncle deserves to rot in jail) and it really seems like he never had a chance after his mother’s death. Yet at the same time he is a contract killer and like Mary I was uneasy with his flashes of anger and coldness. When he blew up at Mary and Marshall I was wondering why Mary didn’t try to connect more with him, why she didn’t at least say ‘no, Dom, your uncle wasn’t right.’
• The explosion was really well done. I loved Mary and Naomi flying over the side of the car as it tipped over. I think it was one of the better done and more realistic scenes like that I’ve seen.
• Dom breaking the fish tank was actually kind of painful. I had to fast forward through it. Apparently I am now really sensitive about fish tanks and pet fish now that we have one.
