Terra Nova 1x01 Thoughts

For the moment I don’t plan on watching any more of this series. If I read great reviews about it I might catch up later but right now it’s left me feeling mainly meh.
Things I Liked
• Elisabeth coming up with the plan to save her family.
• Maddie being a science geek and really smart.
• Skye being collected, brave and unflinching under pressure.
• The Skye/Taylor scene and the hints at their relationship.
• Mira seems pretty badass and competent.
• The mysteries are interesting – who are the Sixers and who sent them, what does the writing on the rocks mean.
• Jim’s attempts to win over Zoey were cute.
• Elisabeth and Jim’s awkwardness throughout worked for me because it made a lot of sense.
What I Didn’t Like
Mostly I was fairly neutral about everything in the beginning. It was predictable but not bad. But basically the entire climax irritated me.
• The whole Jim/Josh conflict. So boring and expected.
• Jim’s attitude with Taylor during the office interview was so arrogant and it bugged me.
• Tasha being the one freaking out was bad enough but then for someone who has been in Terra Nova for awhile and who goes outside the fence all the time to cry “why are they making that noise”, get hysterical and then take off alone into the dinosaur infested jungle really irritated me. Seriously show? For one thing it would have made so much more sense for Josh as the new guy to be asking that question and being unable to handle it. I understand what they were doing with Josh and showing that despite his initial fear he was brave and someone who was a fighter. But by doing what they did with Tasha it just left me annoyed with the Josh character and the show.
It would have worked so much better for me if the kids made it a habit of grabbing a couple newbies and taking them out and it was one of those other newbies that freaked out. They could even have had Tasha run after them into the jungle and it would explain better how she survived.
• As a part of just the general annoyance is the fact that they gave Josh, again the new guy who none of them know, one of the guns.
• Elisabeth leaving the seriously injured and possible dying Tasha to have a short chat with her husband irritated me.
• So all of the dinosaur pack immediately starts running away as soon as the soldiers show up – except for one who decides to stay and attack Josh instead, right where most of the soldiers are, for... what reason? Oh, right, so Jim can save his son!
• Not a dislike per say but what would have been cool would have been to make Maddie the smart but rebellious daughter, send her off with Skye (or even Skye and Josh) and then have her become obsessed with solving the rock equations. As it is I’m hoping that with Maddie being so smart – including at math – Josh and Skye take her to the falls at some point and show her the rock equations.
