I loved it.
I loved the genre shift at the end. From psychological thriller-horror to alien apocalypse horror. Both parts of the story worked really well and honestly the ending made the rest of the movie work even better for me.
The tension and suspense in this movie was A+. So many great moments (the Taboo scene, wow) but there was a low grade tension throughout every moment of the movie.
Excellent acting by all three actors. This is my favourite Mary Elizabeth Winstead performance. She was really great. John Goodman meanwhile was brilliant. Everything about his acting was so good.
I loved Michelle. She was amazing. I loved how clever and resourceful she was. She's just a very smart protagonist which is great.
I loved Michelle's choice at the end to head to Houston to help fight instead of running away to safety in Baton Rouge and how that tied into her history and showed how she'd changed over the course of the movie.
Howard was scary as hell. I loved how the movie played him - how it left you wondering and changing you mind about how dangerous he was, how truthful he's being, if he's right or wrong and how through it all there's this deep unease permeating everything about him.
I liked Emmett a lot, he was sweet. Poor guy. His attempt to cover for their plan (and protecting Michelle's involvement) was pretty well done and considering the situation I can't knock him too much for the explanation he came up with. But at the same time I was mentally going 'noooo' at him. There had to have been a better explanation that didn't involve stealing Howard's gun and making himself a threat for Michelle in Howard's eyes.
I liked the friendship that grew between Michelle and Emmett. Her pulling the bus ticket out of his wallet was such a quietly sad moment.
I really appreciated that there was no overt sexual menace/threats in the movie. I think it would have been very easy to add so it's even nicer that it wasn't.
The crawl through the vents bothered me a little because I felt like Howard should have been able to hit her a lot more considering how long it lasted.
I would love a sequel to this following Michelle vs alien invasion.
I've read that Michelle's boyfriend was going to have a bigger role in the movie and she was going to spend a lot of time worrying about him and I'm so glad that they didn't go in that direction.
