I liked it. It was a lovely bittersweet story about grief.

I was expecting this to be a horror movie. The doors slamming and then attic scenes were very creepy and I liked that but then the creepiness mostly disappeared. There were the couple scenes of thinking someone was in the house but I kept waiting for the movie to go horror and it never did. This isn't bad just a surprised.

I wish that there had been more from Elizabeth’s perspective especially with the new family she’d created and what that meant to her. I felt really bad for Smith and his girls. That said I do get that this was Mark’s story so how it was structure made sense.

I really liked Mark's little growing relationship with Dash and the hopeful note it left Mark on with him letting Dash inside to play with Jacob’s train, and the implication that he had finally dealt with his grief and let go of it. It was a good last scene.

I liked that Elizabeth’s last scene was her finally getting to hold Jacob and then disappearing with him.

Jacob returning to a) reunite and reconcile his parents, b) tell them the truth about his death, and c) be there to leave with his mom all worked for me.

I liked the emotional journey both Mark and Elizabeth went on.

There were a couple moments that struck me – the scene with the bird and Jacob telling them that ‘it’ wasn’t in pain when it died and Jacob’s final confession to his dad that he pushed the button. The way he extolled his dad not to be mad and then how he said it was so familiar that it really got to me.

It bothered me so much that Mark didn’t immediately tell Elizabeth Jacob’s message when she walked in the door. It seems like he waited maybe days until he learned she was dying which - wtf dude? What was he waiting for? Jacob even tells him that Elizabeth blamed herself for Jacob's death if he hadn't figured it out before! How utterly selfish not to tell her and also really inexplicable. There was literally no reason for him not to tell her.

I would have liked it much more if we'd gotten Mark relaying Jacob's message in the very next scene after she returned to the house and then Mark telling her the other part of Jacob's words - that he was going on a long train ride with her - after he learned that she was dying. It would have made him look less like an asshole.
