Lost 6x11 Review

Going into this episode I knew it was a Desmond episode and wasn’t overly excited about it. I like Desmond, and he has had some really excellent episodes, but I wasn’t really expecting much. I was so wrong because this was an amazing episode and one of my favourites of the season. I loved it.
• We have gotten hints throughout all the previous side-flashes that our Oceanic people feel something off in this new life or some connection to other Oceanic people or just a general sense of déjà vu. It makes sense to me that Desmond would see beyond that world into the original timeline but I wasn’t at all expecting it to mostly be prompted by Charlie (mostly because of the scene with Claire). Charlie appears to be very well aware that something is not right, and not only does he know but so does Eloise and Daniel has been figuring things out as well. Right now Eloise seems to know the most, or at least until the end, and I want to know why! Why Eloise? Actually why are these four the first to actually start truly remembering the other timeline? Daniel and Charlie could be explained by their closeness to Desmond on the Island I suppose but – not really.
• “Someone has clearly affected the way you see things. This is a serious problem.” – Eloise. See and here she is being all-knowing again. To me it appears that she remembers everything and I really hope that we learn why she is so special in her knowledge. Why is it a problem that Desmond is remembering? Or is it a problem that someone is ‘affecting’ him? The way that she said that really seemed to indicate that she might have something to do with the side-flash reality’s existence. Also I love how Eloise terrifies everyone including her husband. Heh.
• The side-flash ending was one of the better ones and it makes me so excited to watch the next episode (something I haven’t really felt after the last couple episodes). I am really curious how this is all going to play out. How horrible would it be for the side-flash versions to decide to try and get that other reality back and then succeed? I am so thrilled at the idea that we’re going to get our Oceanic people meeting up and talking and remembering all together.
• “This doesn’t matter. None of this matters. All that matters is that we felt it.” – Charlie. I... don’t agree and I really hope that Charlie doesn’t end up convincing everyone else around to this point of view. I feel like them dismissing this new reality could happen but for most of them it would be so bad.
• Our main, and supporting, people of this episode appear to have, for the most part, ended up in the win column in this new reality.
Desmond – I would call a win. Yes, he wasn’t with Penny and they didn’t have a son but by the end of the episode things seem well on the way to Desmond and Penny finding themselves again (and thus little Hume being born) and Desmond also gets the approval and practically father-like relationship with Charles (and I’d assume his support for the eventual Des/Penny relationship), the good job, lots of money and basic life of privilege. I really can’t stress the Charles-Desmond relationship enough. I mean Charles actually tells him “Nothing’s too good for you.” so... Desmond’s life may not be perfect as of the episode but by the end it’s pretty much on the way there.
Daniel – Win. Possibly he wins the most out of all of them. I mean for one thing he’s not dead so it’s already a hundred times better than the other one. Also in the win – he has a relationship with both his parents and I think there’s more evidence for it being a good one than not, he got to pursue his dream of music instead of being forced into physics, he was never responsible for someone else’s death, he’s rediscovered the woman he loved and she’s not dead either so plus there (and he didn’t have to watch her die in his arms), he has a sister and finally, like Desmond, there is the general life of privilege.
Eloise – Win. She never killed her son, or ‘had’ to send him to his death (or raised him knowing he was going to die at her hand). Her still being married to Charles could be a win or not depending on what the relationship is like. Life of privilege.
Penny – ... not enough to decide but more on the positive side I think. No Desmond and Charlie but as with Des the ending indicates both are on the way. She has a brother and I believe she probably has a fairly good relationship with the entire Widmore side of her family considering she was going to Daniel’s party. I’m also going to assume that she has a life of privilege as well since she is Charles daughter and not estranged from him.
Charles – Win. His son is alive. His daughter is not estranged from him. He has a very close relationship with Desmond – a plus because it adds both another person in his life he cares for, and cares for him, and who he can trust which is always a positive. He’s married to Eloise which could be good depending on their relationship. He’s still a powerful man leading a life of privilege. He doesn’t have a nemesis type relationship with Ben.
Charlie – qualified win. He’s not dead which should have made him an automatic win but he’s still an addict and moreover is possibly suicidal and hasn’t gone through any of the life changing growth experiences that he went through on the Island that made him a better person, and he hasn’t met Claire. However he is alive so it’s a win because at least he has the chance to grow again. Plus Driveshaft is apparently still together and really successful. And Claire is out there in LA, in the same hospital as him in fact, with Aaron and in need of help.
• So it appears that Desmond is doing his back and forth again – unstuck not only in time but also reality – but how much does he remember? Desmond seemed to clearly remember everything we saw in the side-flash when he woke in the room and those feelings were also felt/remembered considering his reaction to Widmore. And I think at the end in the side-flash it’s possible he remembered being back in the original timeline though I suppose he could have just been reacting to his new knowledge (his flashes of Penny were real). But then Desmond on the Island during his scene with Zoe and Sayid was... not all there. Like perhaps a part of his consciousness was back in the side-flash.
• I loved how this episode touched upon some of the most important relationships Desmond had on the Island – Charlie, Daniel, and the brief appearances by Jack and Claire.
• “I’m talking about spectacular, consciousness altering love. ... I see – her. A woman – blonde, rapturously beautiful. And I know her. We’re together, it’s like we’ve always been and always will be. This feeling, this love.” – Charlie. Aww. I was not at all expecting for them to bring up Charlie/Claire. I have at times really disliked the pairing but I guess I still have lots of residual good will from Charlie’s death episode because him going on about Claire made me happy. Also Des/Claire made me aw.
• Was Charlie’s vision of Claire on the plane the first instance for him? Does he now think that only near death experiences can help him to remember? When he crossed the street the way he did I figured that in this reality he couldn’t die.
• I was fairly sceptical about the fact that a) Desmond had never met Charles’s family, and b) Desmond didn’t know that Charles had a daughter names Penny. I’ve decided however that Desmond is possibly based elsewhere in the world (like a London office) and/or he travels a lot, and that because Eloise is in the know she never pushed to meet to Desmond and maybe even actively sabotaged possible meetings.
• It always seems to come back to love with Desmond doesn’t in it? It’s brought up four times in this episode to varying degrees – first with George and his offer to get Des companionship and then Charles telling him that he’s lucky that he doesn’t have loved ones, and then things get explicit with Charlie’s rapturous monologue on love, and then Daniel bring up love at first sight.
• Oh, for Pete’s sake. One would think when the people in charge start screaming ‘no’ you would undo what you just did not wait ten seconds for them to tell you to. Oi.
• What happened to Liam at the police station during Sawyer’s sideways? Is he still wandering around LA looking for his brother?
• Shouldn’t Penny be worried, or at least curious that this random stranger she meets during the night, while all alone, knew her name? I’d be okay with it if he’d stated he knew her father or brother but he didn’t. He’s just this random stranger who knows her name. Seriously, she should know better.
