Moana Thoughts
May. 31st, 2018 07:16 pmI loved it. Lovely lookng, great characters and relationships, good story, funny. I enjoyed it the first time and have only liked it more each time since. Which is good because I've now watched this so so many times.
+ I love the songs. Across the board they are excellent. I even listened to the soundtrack a bunch which is rare for me. Even my least favourite song - Shiny - won me over eventually.
+ I loved Moana, Maui and their relationship. They were great, I loved the journeys both went on, and the slow build of their relationship was wonderful.
+ There was some really beautiful animation in this movie. Tala's ray leaving the island with Moana. Moana diving for the Heart. Moana walking to Te Kā. Also all the hair was amazing especially Maui's. It was hypnotically stunning.
+ I loved how the end with Te Kā played out with Moana realising Te Kā was Te Fiti and returning her heart and restoring everything to right.
+ Gramma Tala was a delight as was Moana's relationship with her. I loved her becoming a ray.
+ The Ocean as a character in itself was great and added some lovely bits of humour. Moana's defiant kick and 'fish pee in you' always makes me giggle and the ocean getting aggravated by HeiHei and locking him in the boat was funny.
+ HeiHei somehow managed not to be annoying and added good humourous moments. I loved that he actually got to help save the day.
+ I loved the scene of Moana saving the turtle especially how she protects it but lets it make the journey itself instead of simply picking it up and putting it in the ocean herself. Very much what the ocean does for her during the course of the movie.
+ Every time Maui tells Moana that he just wanted to give humans the ability to create life I want Moana to say 'I'm a girl, I already have that power'.
+ I will say that after so many watchings there are some things that bother me
- Moana's mom has a significantly smaller role than her dad. I liked what we got with her but I'd have loved more.
- Moana doesn't appear to have any friends which is just weird. I really wish they'd thrown at least one in. I'd have loved a female friend who perhaps could have gone with Moana on the first attempt to even further connect it to her dad's backstory.
- We twice get bigger men yelling in Moana's face and, even though there is no sense of physical threat from either, it rubbed me wrong.
