Knives Out
Sep. 26th, 2021 11:28 pmI enjoyed it a lot.
+ Marta was lovely.
+ I enjoyed Blanc.
+ I liked Blanc mentoring Marta in detective work.
+ The acting was good.
+ I enjoyed Chris Evans a surprising amount as Ransom. He was terrible but fun. I loved how after he was caught he shrugged and tried to kill Marta. I loved his glee around the will reading.
+ I guessed Ransome was the killer as soon as the dogs greeted him with barking.
+ Blanc suspecting Marta right from the start for having something to do with Harlan's death makes me side eye him taking her around as an assistant and apparently not noticing her destroying evidence.
+ I did like Meg overall. Of her entire family I think she was the only one who saw Marta as a person and cared about her. They actually seemed like friends even. She was clearly the one pushing the family to 'take care of' Marta after Harlan's death.
I also think her worry about how she'd handle school was understandable. Going so suddenly from economic safety to suddenly not is scary, especially since it was out of no fault of her own. But her telling her family about Marta's mom being undocumented, even under pressure, was a massive betrayal that I think Marta moved past far too quickly. Still I think Meg's apologies were sincere and I like that Marta did forgive her.
+ I like how the movie handled Marta's relationships with the rest of the family. The way they were all 'she's like family' and reassuring her that they specifically had been on her side and then the movie slowly revealing the truth was great. Also I loved how each of them thinks her family is from a different country.
+ We didn't get a ton of Marta and Harlan but I loved what we did see. It was obvious seeing the ease and affection between them why Harlan chose to leave his estate to her.
+ The twist made Harlan's death much sadder. If he'd only listened to Marta he would have survived instead of dying for no reason. On the other hand, he jumped very quickly into the suicide option and by the time he was actually lying on the couch he should have realised that he wasn't feeling the effects of morphine overdose that Marta had described to him. That plus his new will makes me wonder if he was planning to suicide already and jumped at the chance to make it mean something more?
+ I felt bad for Linda. Money-wise she seems to be the best off at the end since she had her own empire but emotionally this movie was a series of gut-punches for her. Her father died (and of everyone she seemed the most genuinely upset at it, and they appeared to have a maybe strained but still loving and close relationship); she discovers he wrote her completely out of his will (for no seeming reason, including the house which she seemed really upset about); her son conspired to kill her father and did kill someone else; and to end it all she discovers her father's last letter/'game' informing her that her husband is cheating on her.
+ Also I know it's because Harlan was sure Marta or Linda would provide for her but Harlan leaving nothing in his will about his mother bothered me.
