The Candidate
Wow. This episode was a real kick to the gut wasn’t it? Has there ever been an episode where so many main/named characters have died? This episode took out Sayid, Frank, Jin and Sun.
• Oh, Sayid, I haven’t loved you a lot and you’ve done some really horrible things that have bugged me but as a turn back to the light side of the force you did good. It was shocking and it actually got to me.
• When Frank was hit by the door I thought he’d get up again but then we never see him again and that was his death (even more abrupt then Sayid). Poor Frank.
• Then they actually killed off Sun and Jin... bastards. I was in shock at first and then it actually made me cry a bit. When Jin asserted that he wasn’t leaving her I couldn’t help but think of Ji Yeon and what would happen to her. The logical thing to have done was for him to leave so at least Ji Yeon would have one parent but I’m not actually upset with the choice he made. I knew as soon as Jin sent Jack away that he would stay. And perhaps it was irresponsible of him but I completely understood it and felt so much for both of them and I was hoping for a miracle but knew there wouldn’t be one. Who would have known back in season one that they would be such a tragic couple? Oh, Sun and Jin, I hope you’re very happy in the other reality. That final shot of the connecting hands underwater slowly letting go as they die was very well done.
• But the scene that really got to me was the end with the four survivors on the beach and them breaking down. They have all been through so much and lost so much, and so many people over the years and it was like that moment just encapsulated it.
• At the end Kate pretty much ignores Sawyer and collapses into Jack practically crying “I couldn’t find you.” ... so it’s Kate/Jack in the end then? This works for me.
• Jack felt so guilty and remorseful for Juliet’s death that he stopped making decisions. I wonder how being responsible for Jin, Sun, Sayid and Frank’s deaths is going to affect Sawyer?
• I loved the unexpectedness of getting to see Bernard again. I also like that both his and Rose’s appearances in the Sideways are connected to Locke.
• I don’t understand why Widmore’s people, who clearly know about Smokey, didn’t turn tail and run once he showed up instead of standing there and shooting at him or actually running towards him. Literally too stupid to live.
• Seeing Anthony the way he was I found I wasn’t actually all that sympathetic. In fact I was kind of viciously pleased with it considering the hell he put Locke through. I was actually surprised by this because I can and have sympathised with anyone (including people much worse). I didn’t realise I disliked him that much. I couldn’t help but think during Locke’s explanation of what happened – he took them up in his plane a week into his pilot’s license and he doesn’t remember what happened but he knows it was his fault – was that clearly it was Anthony’s fault. It was a different attempt to kill Locke that went wrong. I doubt this is what happened but it was my first thought.
• I loved the Claire/Jack scene and it is exactly what I was hoping for. Claire tracking Jack down at the hospital nominally to ask about one of the things Christian left her (and what does the music box mean?) was lovely. There was just a warmth between them that was missing in the previous episode. Jack asking Claire to come stay with him made me so happy. “No, we’re not strangers. We’re family.” and then they smile all shyly and happily at each other and I kind of melt a bit. Also I loved the shot of their reflections in the music box mirror.
• I was pretty confused about the people Sawyer chose to take with him into his sub – Jin, Sun, Frank, Hurley – and leave behind – Kate, Claire, Jack, Sayid (Locke) but I suppose on further thought it makes sense. He took the two most helpless, in his mind (Sun and Hurley) and got them safely on the sub while also taking two people that can fight and who he trusts. Of those left behind only Kate would matter to him – Sayid he dislikes and thinks has gone to the dark side, he thinks Claire is crazy and dangerous (and she is) and Jack wants to stay.
• “Whoever told you you needed to stay had no idea what they were talking about.” – Not!Locke
“John Locke told me to stay.” – Jack
Oh this was pretty awesome and made me so happy because it really felt like Jack defending Locke. I don’t know how to explain it well. Jack spent so much time at odds with Locke, even hating him and thinking him crazy, and this season he seems to slowly be taking over his role, a role and belief that he’s ridiculed for so long. The way he said his line felt like an affirmation – the guy whose body you’re wearing and who you keep deriding said it and I believe him – and then Jack knocks him into the water. It made me very happy.
• After Kate is shot and Jack starts shooting back he doesn’t take cover like Claire and Sayid do but stands right out in the open. Someone truly is a believer now isn’t he?
• Claire taking out several of Widmore’s men gave me flashbacks to Danielle and felt weird in comparison to Sideways Claire’s innocence.
• Locke seemed pretty pissed after he dragged himself out of the water. ... like a disgruntled cat. Heh. A disgruntled cat with a gun.
• You know, it would have been easy for Not!Locke to let Claire get on the sub but when Sawyer called Claire’s name he didn’t wait for her to respond he immediately started for Sawyer and he had to know how Sawyer would react. Considering that Not!Locke set it all up to kill off the Candidates it seems pretty clear to Not!Locke saving/sparing Claire’s life which I thought was interesting.
• “James, we are going to be okay. You just need to trust me.” – Jack. Oh, Jack. What is he thinking? Does he not remember the last time they went through this? Does he not think that it will be the first thing Sawyer thinks of and thus of the fact that the last time he trusted Jack it got Juliet killed? Seriously as soon as he said ‘trust me’ I was like ‘oh, great Jack, you couldn’t have said anything better to get him to pull those wires’. Considering how much Jack believed, was sure that he was right, and how much was at stake I am pretty mad that he resorted to trying to convince Sawyer like this instead of, say, punching him in the face. This is not the time to be talking, Jack!
• Jin telling Jack to save Sawyer was a nice little moment. Because Sawyer and Jin were friends and part of a team for three years and the show doesn’t forget.
• That final Jack/Locke scene was lovely. “What happened, happened, and you can let it go. ... I don’t really know how to do it myself. And that’s why I was hoping that maybe you could go first.” Aw. I rather loved Jack in that moment. Locke left but I’m hoping he’ll change his mind later.
