The Rescue

It was great.

Luke Skywalker to the rescue! I loved it. I mean I knew about it going in because I'd watched his scenes even before I'd started the show but it was just as wonderful to watch in context. Luke being awesome and saving the day, getting his own Jedi-version of Darth Vader's Rogue One corridor scene. Being the over-dramatic Skywalker we all know he is. I loved him plowing though the dark troopers with such skill and ease. It was badass and it was very cool to watch. Especially after we saw how much trouble Din had with just one. The deep fake was actually pretty good and honestly my joy at seeing Luke again smoothed over any issues I had with it.

Din and Grogu's goodbye was heartbreaking. I love so much Din taking his helmet off so he and Grogu could look into each others eyes as they said goodbye. I loved Grogu first touching Din's helmet and then touching Din's face and how affected Din was by it. I loved that Grogu wanted Din's permission to leave and Din reassuring him it was okay and that they would see each other again was so lovely. Din was so devastated to lose Grogu but he also knew what it was what Grogu needed and wanted and he let him go in such a supportive and compassionate way, and it was beautifully done. Such a heavily bittersweet scene but I loved everything about it.

I loved Din jumping in front of the bullets to save Grogu. The little head pat when he set Grogu on the floor was sweet. Grogu holding up his handcuffed hands for Din to see was adorable.

I was a little disappointed that we didn't see more of Din and Grogu's initial reunion, of Din returning to that cell to free Grogu from his cuffs, to see the inevitable hug.

I'm kind of amused that Luke didn't bother to introduce himself or explain anything (oh, Luke) and Din is all 'yup this is a jedi, nothing more needed to know, feel free to take my kid'. Oh, Din. I mean this is what he's been working towards but still.

Grogu and R2D2 immediately bonding was great. Could they have known each other at the temple?

I liked the Luke/Grogu look exchange after Luke picked him up and it felt like they had a moment of connection but I really wanted Luke to address Grogu. He doesn't actually say anything to Grogu, only for and about him, and it annoyed me a little. Even a "Hello Grogu" would have been better.

Din accidentally becoming the rightful ruler of Mandalore was a fun twist.

I loved that the entire rescue party Din brought with him onto the light cruiser were women and their part in taking the ship was very enjoyable to watch.

I enjoyed both the Din vs dark trooper and the Din vs Moff Gideon fights. I loved how important the beskar spear ended up being.

Honestly if fighting Moff Gideon for the darksaber Bo-Katan really should have been clearer to Din about why she needed to be the one to confront him. Not that I think it would have made a difference since he was fighting for his life but still.

I'm glad Moff Gideon survived because I've been enjoying him as a bad guy.

Moff Gideon was terrified when he realised it was a Jedi/Luke who arrived which I thought was pretty interesting. He's got to be worried Luke will figure out their cloning Palpatine plan, right?

It was interesting to watch the others reactions to Luke. None of them made a move to open the door nor did they lower their guns when he first walked in. Even though he saved them they still considered him a threat? Din is a naive ball of ignorance but all four of the women? They have to know who Luke is right? Is it widely known at this point that Luke and Leia are siblings because if so Cara should know who he is. They have to know what Jedi are, right? It felt really strange to me!

I wonder what Din would have done if Moff Gideon hadn't lied about letting him leave with Grogu? Would he have abandoned the others? Well I guess Cara and Fennec are only there to help save Grogu so presumably they'd leave with him. Hmm. Actually I could see that. Bo Katan wanted the ship and to fight Moff Gideon and she now had both of those, and he thought he'd dealt with the dark troopers, so why not leave?

I liked how pleased Cara was when Din dragged Moff Gideon onto the bridge still alive.

Are the dark troopers armour made of beskar? They actually were pretty impressive and I bought that everyone was screwed if the Jedi-ex-machina hadn't shown up to save them.

I do think that Din taking his helmet off at the end to say goodbye to Grogu would have had more of a punch if he hadn't been helmetless for half of the previous episode.

Ben Solo Organa is currently a toddler and now that Grogu is with Luke I desperately need toddler Ben to show up, to interact with Luke and especially with Grogu. Immediate best friends who get into trouble together or immediate rivals who get into trouble together - either way you know Grogu is probably the one starting it and I find that delightful and want it so much.

I know about the whole Gina Carano situation and it's such a shame because I really liked Cara Dune and what she added to the show and I'm sad to see her go.
