Godzilla vs Kong
Dec. 24th, 2021 11:29 amI liked it okay.
+ On the titan vs titan fight aspect this movie definitely delivered and I enjoyed the Godzilla vs Kong fights and the Godzilla/Kong vs Mechagodzilla fight. Loved Godzilla and King Kong's enemies to allies relationship.
+ I enjoyed everything with Kong. He was great. The direction his story went in was great. The 'destruction' of Skull Island wasn't really explained (how??) but I loved that he ended the movie in a much bigger home, finally completely free. Sad about the lack of others of his kind.
+ Jia, Ilene, even Nathan for the most part were okay.
+ I enjoyed Walter Simmons getting interrupted at the beginning of his monologue by being killed by his own mecha. And Bernie lamenting that he wanted to hear the whole thing amused me.
+ The massive destruction actually kind of bothered me in this movie and I'm not entirely sure why. Usually I love big disaster movies! I was not a fan of them killing off the Iwi natives except one child, even for the 'last of their people' bond between Kong and Jia, it annoyed me but I think that's understandable. Less understandable the attack on the ship convoy and then the utter destruction of Hong Kong left me kind of annoyed. ... Maybe because Kong and Godzilla, while titans who aren't necessarily good guys, aren't bad guys either and yet they're the ones doing most of the destruction?
Two specific moments that bothered me:
Mark Russell being told that Godzilla was making a beeline for Hong Kong but then is told about the evacuation being underway after Godzilla had begun to enter the city. The way that was shot left me going ??? It would have made more sense for Godzilla to arrive at a city that was already in full evacuation.
Nathan protesting releasing Kong from the chains because they needed him, even though Godzilla was literally visibly destroying ships and almost on them. WTF? He won't be very useful if he's dead and also you all are too. So unbelievably dumb. Neither he, nor anyone else for that matter, actually releases Kong until the ship is tipped, when they had ample time to react, was literally the worse. Stop being so dumb thanks.
... I think I needed to go into this movie with my thoughts turned off and I didn't quite manage it.
+ Honestly the whole Apex Cybernetics investigation side-story with Madison, Bernie and Josh left me eh and didn't feel necessary at all. It could have been cut easily.
+ Maia being Walter's daughter felt kind of pointless? She could have easily been a minion for how much it mattered. You'd think if he'd sent his daughter, who he trusted implicitly, and then she died we would see him learn about it and react. But he doesn't and it ended up being the niggling little annoyance. Tie it in somehow or don't do it.
