The Suicide Squad
Jan. 1st, 2022 11:46 pmI really enjoyed it. Very fun.
+ I loved the whole set up of the Suicide Squad in this movie. That it's become a "well oiled" machine where a revolving group of inmates at Belle Reve are brought in under the same deal to take on the issue of the day. There are support staff who make bets, Flagg is still leading, various criminals are reoccurring members. It feels fun and fresh. I like it so much better then if they'd rebooted.
+ There was some seriously black humour in this but it worked for me. I found the movie overall pretty funny/amusing.
+ I thought this movie did a lot better then the previous in making the characters and some of the relationships feel complete and rounded. The previous one also pushed 'found family' with the group which failed hard whereas this one actually felt natural. I could absolutely see the survivors sticking together/having each other's backs. I really hope all of them are in the next movie (and don't die) because I'd love to see these relationships develop even more especially Harley's with the group.
Cleo/Nanaue were surprisingly really sweet. I loved her deciding to be friends with him. I loved her running to hug him at the end and then falling asleep on him as they left. I bought Cleo/DuBois connecting and I liked their looking out for each other. Harley/Flagg's interactions felt like two people who knew each other well. Him changing gears to rescue her was great and I really loved their reunion hug, and Harley's sadness over his death. (Oh and their shared smile in the rain.) I loved Harley and Boomer's happy greeting and their few interactions felt like those of long-time friends. We also got little moments of people helping each other out like Harley and DuBois swimming over to get the evil fish off Nanaue.
+ I loved the little side-story of Sebastian being enamoured with DeBois, DeBois being afraid of him and it ending with Sebastian curling up to sleep on his leg with DeBois overcoming his fear and tentatively reaching out to pet him. Awww. That may have been my favourite side plot. He tried to give DeBois a leaf!
+ Honestly Sebastian was the best - the best and bravest teammate, protective of Cleo - and I am so glad he survived.
+ Harley was as delightful as always. She's just so fun, competent and enjoys life. Her gleeful "Okey doke" to being told to take out the overwhelming enemy force was great. It didn't last long but I liked her new costume in this. The whole romance montage with the new dictator amused me but the conclusion was honestly delightful. Harley shooting him because post Joker she decided if she saw red flags in any new relationship she'd do the healthy thing and murder them was just so Harley and her monologue was excellent and even moving.
+ I thought this movie did really well showing Harley being both unhinged chaos incarnate and very competent. Her escape from capture was great. I really loved the sequence after the bombs went off with Harley knowing immediately how bad Polka-Dot-Man using his power was and then reacting super quickly to jump out of the way, taking him with her and then immediately saving him again by pulling him away from the fire.
+ Nanaue/King Shark was lovely. Okay, he keeps eating people but everyone has faults and he "has no friends" ): His fake moustache disguise, him making the little figure of Peacemaker, his joy at making new 'dumb friends', him wanting to numnum/nomnom everything - adorable. And he really got put through the ringer especially during the sequence where he gets attacked by his dumb friends, falls really far and then gets shot a bunch of times and I felt really bad for him.
+ Nanaue's final 'nomnom?' and Cleo's gentle 'no' and Bloodsport's 'NO!' was cute.
+ I liked Bloodsport/DeBois a lot. Him being so done about everything, the entire movie, was great. His "uhhhh huh" to Waller asking 'are you there' was perfection.
+ I ended up liking Polka-Dot-Man quite a lot and his death ended up the saddest for me. I wish he survived.
+ Cleo was sweet. Her near-narcoleptic sleeping habit was a trait I liked if only for the gag about Nanaue trying to eat her and her not waking up.
+ Even after Boomer's death Flagg dying surprised me. It's too bad because I enjoyed him so much more in this movie.
+ The reveal about TDK's powers, and the reactions to it, made me a laugh so hard. Especially once the hands started slightly slapping the enemy soldiers LMAO. I keep laughing just thinking about it. It was utterly ridiculous but in absolutely the right way.
+ The rescue of Flagg was fun. It was immediately obvious that those people weren't the bad guys based on their base and lack of effective resistance so I was kind of wincing through the whole thing, and yet their awkward reactions when they learned the truth were really funny and Bloodsport and Peacemaker's inventive killing competition was super amusing especially this exchange:
Bloodsport: No one likes a show off.
Peacemaker: Unless what they're showing off is dope as fuck.
Bloodsport: Fuck. That's true.
+ Bloodsport breaking into a screaming 'fuck you', kind of cruel fight with his daughter Tyla was so unexpected from how I thought it would go. It was a fun twist and I like that despite the cold words it was clear they both cared about each other.
+ The opening sequence and fight was fun and unexpected all around. I did not see it ending in the bloodbath it was. Boomerang dying so quickly was a shock. Poor Boomer. Weasel dying immediately because no one checked if he could swim. Savant seemed to be set up as a major character and instead he runs away in fear and gets his head blown off by Waller. It was a good start to the movie.
+ I loved that the Bloodsport/Peacemaker shoot off happened exactly as Peacemaker described it would in their first meeting - only switched around, and it was in fact exactly why Bloodsport won. Guess he should have measured their bullets before going on the mission.
+ I am good with Waller being ruthless. Her blackmailing people, murdering people, sacrificing her own people (Flagg) is all good. But her losing her shit when the team turned back did not work for me.
+ I did like the support team acting as a support team and helping them (sort of) against Starro. That said I was pretty sure based on Waller's look that ALL of them were about to be super dead.
+ "I was happy looking up at the stars." I felt bad for Starro. Poor thing got kidnapped by aliens, held prisoner and experimented on for decades.
+ Polka-Dot-Man's power is actually genuinely scary and impressive.
+ So much gore. Just so much.
+ I loved the place/time titles.
+ What was up with this movie killing birds? It was like very pointed bird death and it confused me.
+ Letting a giant alien run amok seems like a terrible idea even if it is in another country. But I guess this is DC so if things got too out of control Superman or someone else in the Justice League would show up and deal with it.
