Unpregnant
Jan. 2nd, 2022 10:03 pmI liked it. Sweet movie.
+ I appreciated the way this movie approached abortion. Seriously and informatively but also lightly and kindly. The tone of the movie worked really well and I like how fun it was despite the subject matter.
+ Veronica and Bailey rediscovering their friendship was really lovely. I loved all the little pieces of their former friendship - speaking Klingon, the slush, the elaborate secret handshake/dance - and how much they hadn't forgotten about each other. Regardless of her stated reasons Veronica also went to Bailey for help because she still trusted her and that becomes very obvious and Bailey absolutely deserves that trust and was awesomely supportive (if sometimes pushing when necessary). I loved Veronica choosing Bailey at the end and how she stepped up to defend her.
+ The Thelma and Louise homage was a delight.
+ I loved Veronica meeting the other teenager’s eyes before the procedure and both of them looking away and then them looking at each other during recovery and smiling at each other.
+ I loved Veronica’s talk with her mom. I appreciate that her mom didn’t understand or agree with the abortion but that she loved her daughter more than all of that and comforted and supported her.
+ I liked that Veronica confessed to her friends and that she went to join Bailey at her lunch table but I wish there hadn’t been such an abrupt jump between the two. Her friends were worried about her dealing with the whole pregnancy thing by herself and then she just abandons them after dropping that bombshell. It felt very dismissive of them and their friendship with her.
