Bringing Out The Dead

I loved this episode.

Caroline and Elena

• Caroline’s goodbye scene with her dad was so perfect it made me cry. It was heartbreaking.

- “No, no, no sweetheart I don’t hate you. I love you. You’re strong, you’re beautiful, you’re good. And even after everything that’s happened to you... you are exactly who your mother and I hoped you’d grow up to be.” – Bill. Perfect. I don’t entirely forgive him for what he did to Caroline but this scene made me wish he wouldn’t die. I am really glad that Caroline got this – got to be held in loving arms and hear from him how much he loves her and thinks she’s wonderful as she is.

- “Parents aren’t supposed to outlive their children Caroline. It’s okay. This is life. This is what it means to be human.” – Bill. I thought this was pretty perfect as well.

• I really liked getting to see a human chose not to become a vampire. Bill was the perfect person for that. (I think if Elena had transitioned in 2x21 she would have chosen vampire over death regardless of the fact that she didn’t want to be a vampire.)

• I really wish that Liz had pulled Caroline into a hug after Bill’s death.

• Elena killed Alaric! OMG. Granted it was to save his life but god. Oh, Elena. I’m torn between wanting to cuddle her – because Alaric’s family now and he was dying and she had to stab him and then sit by his body waiting and hoping he’d come back – and being awestruck by how awesomely fierce and strong she is. She had to stab him to save him and so she just did it. Because that is who she is. ♥

- I was really worried about Alaric especially when Elena decided she should kill him. The whole ‘doppelganger is a supernatural being’ thing seemed to me to be a bit too tenuous to trust Alaric’s life to. I mean what if she didn’t qualify enough as a ‘supernatural being’? Plus the ring hasn’t been working as well. I just really wanted her to call Damon instead. I was so worried that the ring wouldn’t work and Alaric would stay dead and Elena would have inadvertently killed him and it was freaking me out.

- I really want the show to explore Elena being the doppelganger and a supernatural creature and what that means.

- I loved Elena and Alaric holding hands after he ‘woke’ up.

“Caroline called. Her dad died. Can you stay with me until he wakes up? I can’t lose anymore family.” – Elena, crying. Her last line makes me think that she actually wasn’t sure that he would wake up (which is what I was feeling) and it makes me hurt for her. She stabbed him not knowing if it would work and oh, Elena.

- This scene made me feel really defensive about Elena – I need to just stop reading people’s thoughts the minute they start to complain about her – because I just knew that people would be mad at her for asking Matt to stay with her instead of sending/letting him go be there for Caroline. I just want to tell people to shut up – Alaric’s lying dead on the floor, she killed him and isn’t sure he’ll wake up! Caroline has her mom! Grr.

- I like the implication that Matt is going to head over to the Forbes house to be there for Caroline. I liked him showing up at her house earlier (I assume Elena called him). Also I loved him comforting Elena. Matt was pretty great this episode.

• I loved the Elena/Caroline scenes especially the one on the porch. Elena comforting Caroline and talking about her dad and holding Caroline as she cried – it was wonderful. I love how Elena just sat there with Caroline and let her control the conversation.

- But seriously the next episode had better have a comforting Elena/Caroline/Bonnie scene.

“He doesn’t want to Caroline. The only thing your dad has is his choice.” – Elena. Okay, so that is wildly hypocritical of course (see: Jeremy. Twice. Also lying to Jenna. Though it also brings to mind season 1 and her leaving letting Stefan choose whether to kill himself or not.) But it’s also so understandable. Elena doesn’t want to be a vampire either and was pissed when she thought the decision was taken from her and Caroline was turned against her will (well, without her knowledge) and so I think that Elena saying this was what Caroline needed – because this show is about family but it’s also about choices. This isn’t Caroline’s choice to make no matter how much she loves her father.

- I love how this works on so many levels with Elena – the not wanting to be a vampire and having choices taken from you, of losing fathers/family members and of making choices for family to save them. I feel like there’s a bit of Elena regretting or being sad about her choice with Jeremy here that I wish they’d explored. Perhaps while walking up to her house with Matt. Not that I think she regrets compelling Jeremy to safety, per se. I think it upsets her and makes her feel like a horrible person but that she wouldn’t make a different choice if given the option. I really would like her to talk it over with someone (specifically how her choice makes her feel and see herself now).

• Three Council members attacked – now I’m worried about Liz. They had better not kill her!

The Brothers

“Me, Stefan and Elena living happily ever after.” – Damon. ♥ Sadly not how he meant it.

• I feel like there was more going on in that final Damon/Stefan scene but I’m too dense to see it. Like, there’s them affirming that actually maybe do in fact trust each other and that Damon will always save Stefan but then we get the below exchange on Elena and... well, Damon knows Stefan loves Elena and Stefan knows Damon loves Elena so what exactly was the point of that exchange?

“I love her Damon.” – Stefan
“So do I.” – Damon

Remember “our girlfriend”? ‘Happily ever after’? Go with that! Embrace it!

• I loved Stefan – pouting, grouchy, bitchy, little-brother acting and all – and Damon’s resigned big brother attitude in return.

• I liked that Stefan seemed to honestly worried about Bonnie when they found her.

• The dinner between the brothers was great. I loved the passive-aggressiveness and pretend civility and snarkiness.

“Family above all.” – Elijah. This is basically the shows motto. It’s one of the things I love about it along with how our main characters have come together into a made/chosen family. Of course this is at least partially because all the main character’s blood families keep dying.

“I will never leave her behind.” – Klaus. I found the way he said that kind of hot. I might actually ship Klaus/Elena a little bit. IDK.

• I liked Damon leaving Elijah a note in his suit. Heh.

• I loved Elijah bringing up Elena. Look, they don’t interact at all this episode so I have to cling to something! I really hope we get to some interaction in the next episode. Actually I really want to see some Elena/Rebekah interaction as well.

• I loved Klaus’s reaction to Elijah’s confusion over Elena – i.e. hysterical laughter. It made me laugh. He was just so amused!

• You know, if Klaus really wanted to play games then he should have had humans that looked like Elena waiting on them. I was really amused by him basically trolling Stefan and Damon. It’s kind of delightful.

• I'm excited about all the Originals undaggered and together again. I can't wait to see where this goes. The Klaus vs Elijah fight was great and I love the siblings vs Klaus at the end.

• I’m so glad that we finally got a name for the girl Elena/Katherine are doppelgangers of – Tatia. Pretty.

• I love the confirmation that it was indeed Tatia’s blood that turned the Original’s into vampires. A witch made vampires using the doppelganger’s blood to create them and I love how that ties together witches, vampires and doppelgangers so perfectly.

• So... Tatia wouldn’t choose between Elijah and Klaus, Katherine wouldn’t choose between Stefan and Damon and now we have Elena. Hmm. This feels like foreshadowing that Elena, unlike her ancestors, will chose which in turn makes me a little sad because I don’t want her to chose! Embrace your inner Katherine (and apparently Tatia) Elena and choose both! I wonder if Tatia wanted both a la Katherine or if there was a different reason for why she didn’t chose? (Like maybe she wanted Rebekah instead. Just a thought.)

• I was hoping that it would be Katia who would be in the coffin and that it would require Elena and/or Katherine’s blood used in a spell to open it and free her.

• I feel like Esther’s return is going to prove to be a bad thing for Elena. I mean she’s already tried to kill her once – via Vicki – twice if you consider that she set up the spell to free Klaus needing Elena’s death plus she presumably killed Talia. No, I don’t think this is going to go well.
