The Doom Patrol Season 3
Apr. 23rd, 2022 11:51 pm+ Dorothy dealing with the Candlemaker was a bit anticlimactic and yet I kind of liked it as a resolution. The whole time it was simply Dorothy being passed the mantle from her mother as she leaves childhood, and her being in control and her succeeding on her own, was great. I love that. After everything Niles did out of fear of the Candlemaker, the fact that he was going to kill Dorothy even, and in the end he simply needed to trust her is, just, yikes. He screwed up so much and yet that also worked for me. He was reacting out of ignorance and fear, as well as worry and love for Dorothy and the world, but he was wrong about everything. Makes sense.
+ I was surprised Niles actually died. A part of me was hoping he was going to do a full Xavier and comes back at the end of the season.
+ I liked where the team ended the season. I liked Madame Rouge as part of it trying for redemption.
+ I enjoyed Madame Rouge/Laura and her relationship with Rita and how that all played out the most this season.
+ The team letting Dorothy go bury Niles alone bothered me a lot. She's still a child! Everyone letting Dorothy leave with the random ghost detective team they just met made me laugh. Just... you guys.
+ Episode 4 was so weird and hilarious. The team turns into zombies? Sure why not. Kipling resurrects Niles via his head to chat up his crush? Okay. Darren Jones returns and reveals that he’s now a were-butt, LOL okay than. And then a giant zombies vs were-butts fight – heeee. Episode ends with escaped were-butt newly zombified and running into town – perfect.
+ Kipling not being able to sacrifice Niles head made me awww.
+ The episode ending with Niles letting the zombie team eat his brains in order to save them worked a lot better for me than him sacrificing his immortality/life in order to make them big again. That moment between him and zombie!Jane was lovely.
+ I liked how the show dealt with both Jane and Rita's complicated emotions over Niles dying and then being dead. I loved Jane and Rita commiserating over the loss of him at the resort.
+ Cliff's unwavering anger/hatred also worked for me and could be pretty amusing. On the other hand Vic's, and especially, Larry's reactions were so muted as to almost not be there and that fell short for me. I wanted more.
+ I was disappointed that we didn't get any Rita and Niles interaction in the past. If they couldn't get the actor back on-screen that's too bad but not even a mention of them? It felt wrong, especially since Rita worked there for 30 bloody years, years that Niles was also there. They had to have met. And if they met Niles absolutely would have taken an interest in her. In fact his so vitriolic letter about Laura shows that he he knew about future!Rita being there and took Laura's betrayal of her just as personally. I just wanted to see a little of that.
+ I loved amnesia Rita being struck by seeing Niles’s name and then smelling his sweater.
+ Larry and Laura’s exchange over his ‘space parasite’ was so funny. I loved that his idea on the obvious thing to do was name it and meanwhile Laura could not be more exasperated because ‘jesus christ, Larry burn it’ lol. In general Larry and the negative force creature were great.
+ Larry dealing with his friends dead bodies being mailed to him being to mummy wrap them and place them around the dining room table was so weird and funny. Dude. I love that everyone else was also 'wtf, Larry' about it.
+ Enjoyed the ghost detective team. Would watch more of the three of them.
