It was okay.
Wanda as a horror movie monster was surprisingly delightful. I loved that take. Those were probably my favourite parts of the movie. Creepy and well-done, and taken out of context A+.
However, the direction the movie took Wanda in felt like a really strange follow up to her tv series. I can see it a bit with the very end? But also, really this is what they wanted to do with the character? Did the actress want out? After finally investing in rounding out the character and giving us her POV why kill her immediately? I'd have thought it would make more sense to make the big bad an alternate Scarlet Witch, and through fighting her, Wanda would find a way to move forward. Evil movie villain Wanda needed more lead up.
One of the biggest issues I had was Wanda getting so stuck on those specific versions of her kids. 838 Tommy and Billy are happy, healthy and have a mom who loves them and whom they love back. If Wanda has access to the multiverse then surely there are versions out there that need her (bad home life/orphaned/whatever). Why that one? A lot of issues, especially with Wanda's motivation to go so dark, could have been solved if the movie had simply followed up on the end of WandaVision where Tommy and Billy were calling out to their mom to help them. I could bye her doing this if it was to save them. She let them go once for the greater good, a believable reason could be made of her refusing to do it again and going too far.
I'm really glad that Wanda wasn't defeated by Strange or America or some combination of heroes but rather by being confronted by what she'd become and making the choice herself to stop.
The Earth-838 Illuminati lineup was fun.
I am always happy to see Charles Xavier, especially Patrick Stewart!Xavier. I liked him giving 616!Strange a chance and that he tried to save 838!Wanda but I have to admit to being disappointed that Wanda took him out without a fight. He's one of the strongest telepaths! Give us a fight deserving of him!
I'm always happy to see Peggy Carter too. And Maria as Captain Marvel was also great. But death by statue was dumb. She's a crazy powerful cosmic being now, I'm not buying falling statuary here!
Strange jumping from the balcony at Christine's wedding to play superhero and everyone's reactions amused me.
I like the idea that dreams are actually a view into your multiverse selves. That exchange between serial killer Strange and our Strange about him having dreams about being pushed off a tall building was very creepy.
Strange and Wong's friendship continues to be lovely.
