iaria: (Turned Away)

I really enjoyed it. I found it engaging enough that I marathoned the whole thing in a day.

+ The show did a very good job at creating well-rounded characters and relationships. I also liked that it did a bunch of looks at random characters - like the pregnant student who abandoned her newborn in the park washroom only to return and save her child in a very touching way. Or the dumbass who snuck into the city for social media likes.

+ I was so sure that Cheong-san would survive. Death fake outs are his thing! After multiple episodes of him ending them in peril and then surviving I was conditioned to expect survival. And he was bit by Gwi-nam, which had more than enough time to change him, and he was definitely very goal focused during their fight/when he died. Upon seeing his charred body I found myself waiting for a finger twitch, or for the body to be shoved off to reveal him alive underneath. Even at the very end I was half expecting the reveal of Cheong-san walking out of the shadows behind Nam-ra, and was disappointed when that didn't happen. It would have been perfect. It would have made so much sense. Alas.

+ I hated So-ju's death. Ha-ri asserts afterwards that he died saving them but did he really? Cause this is not how it came off to me. That whole sequence sat wrong with me from him running away from them and throwing flares to him choosing to stay behind to lock the gate. It seemed completely unnecessary to me! Like, he couldn't have done it from the other side of the gate? Plus he knows how many more dangers they still have to face to get to safety.

We spent eight episodes following his determination to save his daughter, he fought through so much to get to her, somehow conveniently finds her in just the nick of time, gets a heartwarming reunion and then 10 minutes later sacrifices himself? Seriously?

+ I was really bothered by the lack of reaction to Ji-min's disappearance. We didn't even get everyone asking Hyo-ryung what happened to her! It was completely glossed over which was weird, and especially for On-jo who so recently bonded with her and convinced her to live, to say nothing felt very wrong.

+ Another missing scene was Ha-ri and Mi-jin learning that Nam-ra is a 'half-zombie'. I assume they learned because they never once question or are weirded out by her occasional strange behaviour or strength but I wanted to see their reactions to it! They never once seem wary or scared of her which I found strange.

+ Nam-ra does step up multiple times against Gwi-nam but I wish she'd taken the lead against him, especially at the construction site. She stepped up on the school roof so why not later?

+ I like Hyo-ryung fine but honestly I never really got a good sense of who she is as a person. She's just there, being fine. By the end she's the one I least know or care about.

+ I'll be honest I wish that Ji-min and Hyo-ryung had switched places during the storm run. Ji-min surviving would have worked better for me. I found her a much more interesting character, I liked her relationship with On-jo and her being there at the end with Nam-ra would have had a lot more weight/meaning to it.

+ Mi-jin's crush on Ha-ri was delightful. I loved that despite their initial disdain Mi-jin couldn't help but admire Ha-ri. I loved her "Fuck. She's so cool" and her support of Ha-ri. They were great.

+ I loved On-jo and I-sak's friendship and I was disappointed she died so soon into the series. On-jo's reaction to I-sak's infection was really touching and sad.

+ Na-yeon was messed up and what she did was sociopathic but I found her end really tragic. The fact that her class by chance ended up taking safety in the same room she was locked in and that she did have so long to open that door but simply couldn't work up the courage to face them (I found that so relatable. When she does long afterwards it's only to immediately be killed by Gwi-nam. It was a lot more abrupt end then I was expecting and I do think it would have been far more interesting to watch her try and escape on her own and then watch her and the others meet up. How would they react to her? Would she be accepted? Could or would she do something to try and make up for what she did? Honestly even just watching her try to survive on her own would have been better. After Ms. Park's sacrifice I wanted her to have more of a chance to fight to survive.

+ I liked both groups coming up with the same escape plan but I wish they'd met up earlier in the show so the girls could have had more bonding time with the others.

+ Byeong-chan leaving Hyeon-ju chained up in the science room was very dumb. He should have tried to move her to his apartment. Of course she was going to be found eventually! It's a school!

+ I'm so curious about what exactly caused Nam-ra, Gwi-nam and Eun-ji to change so differently from everyone else. The only obvious link is that they all had a very specific goal in mind when they were bitten - Eun-ji was determined to destroy the phones no matter what and Gwi-nam was determined to kill Cheong-san. Nam-ra feels slightly less connected but I suppose we can see her as determined to save Su-hyeok. But if that's all it took to shift how a person changes then surely there should have been a lot more "half-zombies" running around. Even if most people probably died afraid more than anything more than three had to have a goal. Like, for instance the little girl's mother as she was being eaten and presumably watched her daughter escape had to have been desperate to save/protect her, no?

+ On-jo's memorial trees to their lost were lovely. I loved all of them turning up at the end to make the trek to the school to see if it was Nam-ra lighting the fires.

+ Some small moments I loved:

- Detective Jae-ik with the children he rescues was adorable.

- Jae-ik dressing down Orangibberish was fun.

- So-ju hugging Cheong-su was so lovely. After all So-ju has known him just as long as On-jo.
