The Midnight Sky
Mar. 5th, 2023 10:53 pmI liked it.
+ Well that was a depressing ending. The end of humanity. I went in expecting there'd be saving something and the possibility of hope and then it rapidly became clear that nope. Even with the livable world right there just in reach. That Sully is pregnant honestly makes it worse and even more depressing. Their daughter will never know any other person and one day she will be alone and in the end she will likely be the last human. Unless Sully and Ade have more kids but yikes to that.
+ I honestly loved how Maya's death played out. Her death in itself was so well shot - the stark white airlock, the shower of blood drops when her helmet is removed, the pull back at the end to the room filled with blood droplets. I loved the choice to focus on Sully and Maya, with Sully talking to her and Maya concentrating on her, and the guys trying to save her completely fuzzed out in the background. The lead up was pretty good too with the space walk repair, the happy sing along, the tension of the ice storm and then everything seemingly fine until it wasn't. It was my favourite part of the movie.
+ I didn't see Iris as a figment of Augustine's imagination coming but I mostly liked the twist. That said a couple times we got things from her POV without Augustine in sight which is not playing fair.
+ The missed connections in the final call - she doesn't know he's her father and he doesn't know she's pregnant. Emotionally that scene worked for me. This movie as a whole seemed very much about missed connections.
+ The Sully/Ade relationship was so weird to me. I don't think they ever even touch each other once? They're in a romantic relationship I guess but there is no physical affection of any kind. Even at the end, at the end of humanity, they don't take a moment to hug. Regardless of romance, with the loss of everything they simply move back into work with no attempt to support/comfort each other. I guess that's simply the type of people they are but it was a choice.
+ Despite guessing immediately that Sully was Augustine's daughter I found myself getting caught up in how much Augustine's urgency to contact and 'warn' the ship made no sense. They were in no danger and they'd learn it soon enough. But of course it wasn't really about that. His calculations for their return were probably important but it was really about Augustine wanting to see his daughter one last time and his regrets.
+ Even if they didn't realise how close the world was to ending I'm surprised that they still sent such a small mission crew to check out the moon. This is literally the fate of humanity on the line! Also did they not have any way to get anyone else off the planet? Was this really the very beginning stage of this plan? Did everything go wrong on the world that quickly?
