Randomly decided to rewatch this and still find it a pretty good zombie movies.

+ I enjoyed the zombies and how the very quick change and fast moving nature made them this sort of overwhelming horror. The initial city outbreak with Gerry and his family going from average day to the sheer WTF and terror of everything being overrun was well done.

+ The W.H.O. lab sequence was very fun overall. Probably my favourite sequence. I loved how we got the other scientists watching via security cameras as if they were watching their own horror movie.

+ The solution was pretty clever and I liked that. Camoflaging the human population by making them temporarily sick and thus not appetizing is neat. Although considering how many people are in hospitals you'd think someone would have noticed before now that there are a lot of hospital patients left alive and unbothered.

+ The overrunning of Israel bothered me because Gerry at least knows that the zombies are attracted to sound and it takes him way way too long to make the mental connection that hey too much noise is bad and try and warn them. But also Jurgen is pretty on the ball so like you'd think this would be something he's have noticed already and a 'be quiet' protocol would be in place. Also better security/eyes on the zombies themselves just to keep track of what they're doing.

+ Segen and the WHO doctor getting just to the right area and then managing to run all the way back to the bridge and safety without actually getting where they needed annoyed me. Basically once again Gerry having to be the hero. And like the set up makes sense enough and them turning and running causing enough noise to lure all the zombies worked well and frankly is something they should have done from the beginning. aka create noise at a distance from them and where they wanted to go and then just sneak in.

+ Honestly the biggest issue is that the movie made Gerry the hero and then contrived at every possibly moment to make sure he got to have hero moments/survive. I like Gerry! But it got a bit much. That said I did like that he kept meeting a lot of different people who ended up sacrificing themselves or putting themselves in harm in order to help him with his mission. I liked those moments throughout of kindness and compassion. I think a more ensemble approach to the movie would have worked better.

+ Tommy escaping his apartment and getting to the roof was complete nonsense.

+ I did appreciate the whole found family vibe and how Tommy was immediately adopted into the Lane family. And she wasn't shown at the end but I like the idea that Segen was also adopted in and was there with Gerry on that boat.

+ Karin bothered me so much in her portrayal. In herself she's perfectly fine and likeable but the way the movie uses her annoyed me a lot.

Small stuff like her forgetting her purse (with the inhaler) isn't on the face of it an issue. She was just in a car accident that caused her to hit her head, everything is chaos and she's worried about the girls so it's not that it's not understandable, only in addition to everything else you see her forgetting something essential and meanwhile Gerry is on the ball getting the girls out of the car and figuring out where they need to go.

In the car just moments before that we had one of the dumbest moments when Karin is trying to get Rachel back in her seat and actually says 'Gerry' as if asking him to help - when he is driving their car through fucking chaos, what the hell??! Don't distract the driver! And he even looks away to comply. Dumb, dumb.

In the camper she calls him to Rachel's side while she rummages for the spare inhaler and while this time was vastly less dumb, and having someone to keep Rachel calm/breathing is important, having Gerry keep driving is probably more important. And this is probably being too sensitive but her subsequently taking over driving and having to contend with the car not starting made me sigh.

Then on a more narrative level the movie writing in the store attempted rape of her so Gerry could come to the rescue pissed me off. I liked them throwing in the seeming danger of the young guy at the pharmacy only to have him help and it being a misdirect about where the danger is coming from but them choosing this as the danger is bullshit.

Karin calling Gerry on the SAT phone, and of course it alerting the zombies, was dumb on both their parts. He should have turned it off, she shouldn't be calling him when she doesn't know what situation he's in.

Basically it's just her whole role seemingly being moments like all the above where she isn't being an active help in their survival leaving Gerry as the one to always save the day that leaves me deeply annoyed.

The absolutely number one thing that pissed me off though was when they got to the apartment roof and she stood there with the kids when he went running to the ledge - and left the door standing open at their backs and it was up to Gerry to run back and close it. The fuck, Karin? Get it together!
