Tale of the Nine-Tailed Rewatch
Jan. 11th, 2024 10:09 amI decided to rewatch the first and last episode of the first series to prepare to watch the sequel. It'd been a long time since I watched the first one and while I didn't want to spend the time doing a full rewatch I figured the first (as a reintroduction to the characters) and the last (to remember where we let off at) were a good compromise in preparation.
First episode (thoughts without reading my previous thoughts):
I honestly loved it. It made me want to rewatch the whole series again. (I am not. But I will add this series to a rewatch list.)
+ Ji Ah is amazing. I remembered loving her the first time too but memory and feeling something are very different, and I fell in love all over again. She is so fucking smart! Even as a kid. I love how observant she is, how quick she is to put information together to come to the right conclusion. I loved her realising something was wrong as a kid and accepting that instead of just trusting what should be true, testing her theory and then actually attacking the imposter. She would have died if Lee Yeon hadn't saved her but she did so good for a six year old, A+ job.
The traps she laid out to capture Lee Yeon - first baiting him to her house and setting up a camera to capture what happens, then breaking into his house and falling off his balcony in order to get close to him - were great. Of course it also really highlighted her recklessness and the frankly crazy extremes she is willing to go to learn the truth about her parents (inviting a murderer into her house, falling from a skyscraper, insane, insane, insane) but I also love that about her.
Just all around Ji Ah was AMAZING. Love her in this ep which makes it all the sadder when I remember that I was very disappointed by her development over the series and that she never again reached the heights of this one. It makes me not want to rewatch so that I don't lose this feeling and also makes me want to rewatch because maybe this time I'd find it different?
+ I also loved Lee Yeon. I find his attitude really fun. His interactions with various characters (the little boy who Rang adopts later, Taluipa, Ji Ah, Rang) great.
+ Rang as far as this episode goes I didn't love as much as the above two but I do remember how much I loved him before and that carries over.
Final episode:
+ I still find the video goodbye letters Yeon and Rang sent each other, and the reactions of the living brother, beautiful and moving. Love their relationship so much.
+ I really don't get why Yeon lied to everyone, including Taliupa and Hyunuiong, about coming back as a human. Still makes no sense to me.
+ The interview scene between Ji-ah and Rang was delightful and reminded me how much fun I found them and how disappointed I was that they weren't given more screentime together.
+ Loved Rang and his made family with Yoo-ri, Soo-oh and Shin-joo. I loved that in Rang's photos Shin-joo was always in them too showing that Rang really had accepted him as part of his family.
+ Yoo-ri and the others desperately running to be with Rang before his death and only just missing him was heartbreaking.
+ I loved Yean's reaction when Shin-joo started to sing, lol.
