Mar. 22nd, 2012 07:36 pmKnight and Day: I liked it a lot more by the end then I thought I would based on the beginning. It was completely ridiculous, the effects weren't amazing and the fighting was only okay, and I spent the first half of the movie thinking Tom Cruise's character Roy was insane (wouldn't that have been a twist!). But like Diaz's character June Roy and his kookiness grew on me and I spent more time laughing and amused by the utter ridiculousness of what was happening then anything else so I think the hour and forty minutes watching it weren't wasted. Also I really liked that reversal between June and Roy at the end.
Cold Magic and Cold Fire by Kate Elliott:
I really enjoyed these! I like the writing and will definitely be checking out some of the authors other series.
The world building is original and fascinating. It's a kind of bizarre but wonderful mix of... industrial revoltution + African diaspora into Europe + a broken but still around Roman empire + magic (ghouls and mages) + a really neat spirit world + sentient descendants of dinosaurs... it is really cool and I'd love to read more of this world.
Or as it's described on her site: Afro-Celtic post-Roman icepunk Regency fantasy adventure with airships, Phoenician spies, the intelligent descendents of troodons, and a dash of steampunk whose gas lamps can be easily doused by the touch of a powerful cold mage.
- I adore the Cat/Bee relationship and how central it is in both girls lives and in the books. I love how devoted they are to each other. They were my favourite part of the books.
- I liked both Cat and Bee as characters a lot.
- I only wish the series was done in both Cat and Bee's POVs because Bee has her own interesting tale to tell and I really wanted to read it as well.
- The Cat/Andevai relationship was great.
- I liked Rory a lot. He was a fun addition.
