The Toast Derivation

There was a lot I really liked about this episode. I found it both really fun and all the characters likable. Pretty much anytime Sheldon is pushed outside his comfort zone its amusing and this was no exception.

• All the Raj apartment and Leonard/Sheldon scenes were perfect. What I really want now is everyone to hang out – the guys and the girls (and for the first time they’re actually completely even. So – paintball?)

“Oh, hell I miss him.” – Leonard. That was said just perfectly. ♥ Bewildered and flabbergasted and kind of appalled by the fact that he does in fact miss Sheldon even though he daily wants it hurt Sheldon. Raj and Howard’s expressions were great.

• I was annoyed when Sheldon was putting together his new group of friends and he ended up picking three kind of random guys instead of the most obvious choices. Why couldn’t Sheldon’s new group of friends be Penny, Amy and Bernadette? I mean two of them are already his friends! Sheldon considers Penny to be ‘one of his closest friends’ and he and Amy are close friends as well. It did kind of feel like his relationship with them was being denigrated. Or at the least it was being ignored even though we did get that great scene at the Cheesecake Factory bar between the three of them. Because, yeah we got that scene, but when Sheldon was thinking about making up a new group of friends he chose three random guys he knew instead of the two girls he’s already friends with (and one who’s already part of his group)? Why? What was the thinking supposed to be here? Because really all I can come up with is that they (TPTB) felt like Sheldon needed a group of male friends. Female friends didn’t count.

“I had to leave. They were having fun wrong.” LOL. It was perfect – both awesome and so very Sheldon.

• They could have easily had Sheldon put in the same situation – feeling alone, and left out and as out of place with the three girls. I mean on one hand it might have bothered me because of it implying he can’t be friends with just the girls (when we know he can) and just the implications of him inviting the three girls over and then having that “I’m sad” moment. That would have made me sad. Yet I can totally see it playing out that way. He could try and steer the conversation where he wants it to go, the girls could end up going off in their own direction. The karaoke machine could still have been brought out, Sheldon could still have been not pleased and he could still have gone to Raj’s and everything could have played out the same.

- Plus then we could have had a scene at the end where LeVar Burton shows up, grins to see the girls singing and dancing, they could greet him with cheers and ‘omg, I love you’ and he could be all “I love Twitter”, the end. That would have been just as much fun, IMO.

• I really like the idea of him inviting the three girls over in an attempt to be the nucleus of a new group of friends – and then it ends up being centred on Penny. That would make sense with that group and it would be funny and it would work with his final scene going back to the boys.

• The other thing that really bugged me was Sheldon knocking on Raj’s door with “all my friends” three time... because as stated above that is simply not true. They are his only male friends but he has two female friends and it once again felt like his relationships with them just counted for nothing. Bah.

• I loved the scene at the bar. The interactions between the three of them are always so excellent. I just really love how Penny reacts to Sheldon, and now Amy. She just accepts them for who they are and I love that. I loved Amy’s “hey, bestie” and that Penny was pleased to see Amy. I like that way that Penny doesn’t even blink any more at Amy and Sheldon’s personality quirks.

“For the first time in my life I’m not in a relationship and I’m totally okay with it.” – Penny I really liked that. Why can’t we have that? I also liked the girls questioning her on what it’s like to be so conventionally pretty that you can just pick a guy to take home any time you want.

• I like Priya and I really want her to become friends with the other girls. I’m overall pleased with how the whole Penny/Leonard/Priya relationship is playing out. I like that neither girl is being bitchy about the other and that in all of their interactions and talking about each other they’re friendly. I don’t love that Penny apparently is still in love with Leonard but whatever. I want them to be friends.

• Did Howard and Bernadette end up breaking up after their failed attempt to live together? They can’t have; I’m sure they would have made a bigger deal about it. It does make it a bit weird then that she wasn’t at Raj’s for dinner either of the nights we see. I mean she could have been working the first time, and I love the idea of her putting her friendship with Penny first and going with Amy to cheer her up instead of dinner at Raj’s but it stuck out.

• Howard got a couple of really great lines this episode: “Oh, please that crazy bastard is looking at quirky in the rear view mirror.” and “I think it’s like Beetlejuice. We said his name too many times.” LMAO.

• To be fair I didn’t actually watch most of the scenes between Sheldon, Zach, Stewart and Kripke because it hit my embarrassment squick too much. I think Stewart’s inclusion into a Sheldon created group makes sense. And I could even maybe, slightly, see Zach (Sheldon wanting a ‘Penny’ in his new group... but then why not just ask Penny since she’s right there?) but I just do not see Kripke. They hate each other!
