Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken
Feb. 16th, 2024 09:10 pm+ I liked the characters. They were all pretty likable.
+ I liked Ruby/Conner. I loved that they had basically the same thoughts on the whole prom situation. Their duel quadratic equations asking out idea was very cute. They seem very in sync which I like.
+ I liked a lot of the little character notes - Trevin has a Let's Play channel, Arthur's ASMR channel, the reactions of the various kids to the library being demolished by a monster (the two debating if she'd beat Godzilla made me laugh).
+ The final battle was fun.
+ I really wish it had ended with Ruby and Agatha answering the Call.
+ I love that giant kraken become armoured when attacked/in danger.
+ I liked the idea of Ruby and Chelsea, daughters of mortal enemies, working together to bring peace between their species. I also liked the idea of Chelsea, popular and vain and kind of a bitch, turning out to be good and a good friend contrary to how that trope often goes. Both these things were firmly kiboshed with Queen Narissa but I still love the idea.
+ I love the idea of the only female giant kraken. I thought at first it was all the women so was disappointed when it was revealed that it's only the royal family. I guess that's why they're the royals. I guess if every female kraken was that large it would be a lot for the ecosystem.
+ Grandmamah's "Of course they do, people are stupid." made me laugh too.
+ Being from Canada as the reasoning for why they Gillman's are blue and look as they do amused me enough that I ignored how ridiculous it is that everyone just goes along with it.
+ Agatha says that they need the sea air to stay moist but I'm with Brill. She doesn't have to live right on the edge of the ocean does she? Pick a coastal city that's bigger at least.
+ I was very amused by Agatha's 'you each landed one' during her break up of the kids fight.
+ Ruby frying kids phones for playing the kraken exposé was just wrong.
