It was fine.

I liked the family and the care they took of each other.

I thought there were some really nice scenes of the family having to navigate being silent. Them just sitting in the car was well done.

The situation with the dog was deeply sad and very effectively done. It was a difficult situation to be in and hard to watch. But I get the choice Hugh made. I don't know what else he could have done. Cover the dogs head and cuddle him? But he knew his people were in danger and was determined to protect them. I don't think there was a way to quiet him. (It made me think of Deep Impact in which the dog situation there still makes me mad, lol. This was done well.)

I liked that they set up the dog situation with the man who robbed them and seeing how protect he was.

I don't think the weird cult was really necessary. Yeah, humans being terrible is a common theme, and also reality, but cults this fast? It's been like a week. I had the same thought when it was quickly mentioned or shown that people were breeding them and I was like how? It's been days! Unless a lot more time had passed then shown.

When the cult arrived at the house it seemed very obvious to me that there was an easy way to get rid of them - throw something noisy at them! When Hugh went back into the house that's what I thought he was going to do not grab the gun. Granted at that point murdering them all by setting the Vesps on them to eat them alive was a bit extreme but also I've watched a lot of dystopian movies.

The cult using the cells phones against the family was clever.

I loved the family as a whole going into murder mode to save Ally, each of them taking on a kidnapper and playing a part in saving her.

Hugh wood-chipping the Vesps was amusing.

I do like the swarm aspect of the Vesps. It works as something terrifying, in the same way as zombies, simply because there are so many and it's easy to get overwhelmed. The fact that they are flying makes it worse. The old woman's death was really harsh.

The Vesps are used to living in the cave system and thus not used to nature. Yes we saw the thunderstorm causing them to freak out but even something as simple as wind should mess with them. Not even just the hearing but their ability to fly because they haven't had to deal with it before. There was a lot about the Vesps that made me go 'eh really?' Like the cold being their weakness but they come from a cold dank underground biome. Extreme colds, sure but just cold? What about the sun? They've never seen it, how does it affect them?

The subway train sending the pregnant lady and her baby out onto the tracks and essentially sacrificing them to a horrible death to protect themselves is a very similar situation to the dog but unlike with the dog I find it a lot less, uh, defensible? Understandable? Fear of horrible death is certainly understandable but it bothered me how quick they were to abandon her even if I did understand it. I even get the 'needs of the many' aspect. IDK.

I thought for sure Glenn wanted his gun to kill himself and when Hugh walked away I kept expecting to hear a gunshot. Glenn bringing the Vesps onto himself to protect the family was really brave. Lynn sacrificing herself to save Ally was also brave, though her death I didn't find unexpected considering her condition, but for some reason I found it less effective then Glenn's death.

We've seen how hair trigger the Vesps can be at sudden sharp noises so when Hugh clicked the lighter in the store he should have been immediately attacked. Instead of trying to drag out the tension by it failing once, have it catch but at the same time have a Vesp flying at his face.

I was a little annoyed by the directing choice of the camera when Ally was taken of zooming in on Hugh's face. IDK, there's something about female characters being in danger and the camera lingering on the reaction of a man even when there are women around with a similar level of emotional investment that annoys me. Make it a family shot.
