Frieren Season 1 Thoughts
May. 24th, 2025 09:51 pmI liked it. It was a very slow moving series and it took me awhile to get invested but I'm glad I watched it.
+ Frieren and Fern are wonderful and I really enjoyed their relationship. I liked how Frieren tries her best to take of Fern, including her emotional needs even if she doesn't really understand them or why something matters to Fern. I love Fern often resigned annoyed frustration in having to deal with Frieren being surprisingly childish.
+ Fern revealing that she continues on as a mage because magic brings Frieren joy and seeing her happy makes Fern happy ♥
+ Fern's reaction to Methode hugging Frieren, or rather starting once Frieren hugged her back and said she smelled pretty, was amusing. So very grumpy! I loved her pulling Frieren away into a corner in order to possessively hug her from the back all while glaring at Methode the entire scene - it was hilarious.
+ I loved the female linage of powerful mages. Serie to Flamme to Frieren to Fern. All very powerful women, who have or potentially will greatly affect the world. A+ for that.
+ Flamme is great and I really just want more of her relationship with Frieren. I hope when they finally make it to Aureole we get to see their reunion as well.
+ I enjoyed the slow background reveal to both the audience and to Frieren herself that Himmel was in love with her. That worked for me and I thought it was well done. It feels like Frieren might be learning too in the process of this journey that she might love him too - though that I'm less certain on, and can take either way.
+ I liked the way the show inter-cut between Frieren learning or teaching something with her learning the same thing from/by Himmel. She coasted through her decade with Himmel and the others, and didn't appreciate or yet understand the importance of them or that period of her life - until she met Fern and began her journey. Her flashing back to her past (often in tandem with her experiencing something similar in the present) is her finally realising the import of that moment, re-contextualizing it for herself, and continuing her own journey of self-discovery.
+ I like Stark but am pretty eh about Stark/Fern. I loved how while the others were doing the mage trials he was doing his own thing and making friends with everyone, and I want to see more of that and less of him and Fern having misunderstandings and/or fighting over dumb stuff.
+ I liked Lawine and Kanne. They're totally in love with each other and it's great, and I will accept no other answer.
+ I was surprised that Lawine/Kanne didn't just run after Fern and Frieren at the Dungeon test. Denken was right that they should work together.
+ I love that Frieren can't get past her own curiosity and need to know 100% to ever not fall to a mimic, even when it is very obvious.
+ I think of the various reoccurring characters we get the groups during the First Class Mage exam. Beyond Lawine/Kanne - I liked Wirbel; Ehre is totally going to be revealed to be the girl he had a crush on as a kid (and she knows it) but in general I enjoyed their trio (with Schraf) and the fact that they stayed together at the end. Übel is a psychopath but can be fun especially when she's interacting with Land. Her fascination with him and the way she saved him (even knowing he was a clone) makes me think this is the most she's ever felt for anyone. I want to see more of their relationship even if they aren't my favourite characters.
