iaria: (Turned Away)

• I've never seen the Kathy Bates legal drama Harry's Law, though at one point I planned to, but I'd always thought it didn't do very well in the ratings and so I wasn't surprised by it's cancellation. However according to this list of cancelled show Harry's Law was actually NBC highest rated show at 7.8 million viewers. WTH? As the highest rated show you'd think it'd be their centerpiece show but then you learn that it's audience skews old (and I bet more women than men though I don't have confirmation) and as everyone knows only men 18-49 matter. Even for the highest rated show on a network. *is bitter* This annoys me so much.

• I've been watching Shonda Rhimes new show Scandal. Not bad. It definitely grew on me the more I watched though there isn't really any one character or paring that I love or want to watch the show for. Still I will probably watch the second season.

- I do like the protagonist Olivia Pope (as played by Kerry Washington).

- The team's not bad though there's no real stand-out. I like Harrison the most individually and the Olivia/Stephen relationship out of all of them. I like their friendship. I like that they're all very competent at their job. I like how loyal they are to Olivia but that they still call her out when needed.

- I'm kind of impressed with how the show managed to make the Olivia/Fitz affair work for me with 1x06. Up until then, while I thought they had chemistry, the whole 'affair' part of their relationship made me very meh about them. So seeing how they fell in love and the situation surrounding it made it them a lot more understandable. Largely because of how despite being married it's clear from the beginning that Fitz and Melly aren't a couple anymore in any other way.

- They also managed to make the Fitz/Amanda affair more palatable as well with the reveal that it was a one night stand instigated by her just after Olivia broke up with him and he was vulnerable and sad. That along with how his relationship with Olivia actually happened and the reveal of him being the idealist among everyone made me like him a lot more by the end of the season.

- I loved Melly and the reveal that not only did she know all along about the Olivia/Fitz affair but that she supported it. And that she was the real driving force behind him becoming president. The final Olivia/Melly scene in 1x07 was excellent.

- I liked the Olivia/David Rosen relationship a lot.

- I liked Cyrus a lot as well, and I loved him being married to a younger man, but the reveal in 1x07 that he had Amanda killed was a bit much.

- 1x03 had a really excellent scene between Harrison and a lab tech that I still remember and love weeks later. He goes into her lab and flirts with her to try and get a rape kit and she just lets him have it with an amazing awesome rant. I liked his response afterward.

I also loved the powerful and painful speech Helen directed at Olivia in 1x03. It was another great scene - less fuck yeah - but really emotionally moving. Both scenes gave such a respectful voice to women and rape victims that's sadly not that common (that I've come across) and it was just really wonderful to see.

- The above sticks out all the more considering I almost dropped the show after 1x02 and Abby running into the office, twice, shouting "she's a whore". I just found it really distasteful. Possibly it's why Abby is still my least favourite of the team.

- I was a bit sad that Billy ended up being behind everything because I was quite enjoying him and his friendship with Olivia.

- Huck was the weak point of the team for me until 1x05 and with the reveal of his background he became much more understandable and interesting character where before I just found him very flat.

- We only really got to meet David's assistant Alissa once but I really liked their scenes in 1x07.

- I'm not a fan of the show ending with the cliffhanger of "who is Quinn really" and wish they'd just told us and then ended.

NCIS 9x24: Honestly I was mostly meh about it. The actually story of the episode wasn't really that interesting. I mainly spent my time worrying about Jimmy and waiting for him to be killed. I was so sure they were going to kill him off that Ducky's heart-attack took me by surprise. I hope the show doesn't kill him because he's great and it would be so weird without him. I did read that the actor has a new two year contract with the show so I feel fairly certain that he won't die... but not completely.
