The Last Scandal Thoughts
Feb. 16th, 2011 07:46 pmEpisode 11
This was a very amusing episode.
• Jae Bin impersonating Dong Hwa was hilarious. And I loved that Sun Hee’s reaction to it was to be kind of creeped out and to wonder if he’d been drinking.
• I was amused by Won Tak and Yoo Shik spying on Sun Hee and Dong Hwa.
• I loved Jae Bin taking Sun Hee’s note to go away and turned it into a song request for “Don’t Go”. Oh, and the way he held his hand against his face, shielding himself from seeing Sun Hee glare at him made me smile and was adorable.
• God, Jae Bin is so childish. Maybe it’s because I haven’t watched in awhile but he seemed particularly immature this episode. I find it kind of fascinating how he manages to make his behaviour and varied antics endearing, amusing and obnoxious all at the same time. I think it’s because he can be really sweet and wonderful and he clearly loves her so much but doesn’t know how to show it. He’s childish, yes, but he’s also sincere in his feelings for her and can be so earnest. He hurts so much for her when she hurts and just wants to make her happy and to feel treasured. Emotionally he is so open to her which she doesn’t realise and so he keeps being hurt. I think that offsets his tantrums and obnoxious behaviour.
• Hoon’s “He’s the person I respect most. I’m satisfied having someone like that as my father.” made me go ‘aw’. I’m glad his father got to overhear that.
• I liked Dong Hwa’s pissed “You made a mistake. If you mess with my brother you die.” He was clearly mad about Sun Hee as well but it was just as much for his brother that got him to get physical with Yoo Shik and I liked that.
• I still really don’t see how what’s happened with her husband is in any way Sun Hee’s fault and her continuing guilt and angst over it being her fault is frustrating to watch. I just want to shake her and say “It’s not your fault!” So I was really glad that Sun Hee did strike back during her fight with him and called him on being such a hypocrite.
Episode 12
• Wow, this series managed to surprise me. I never saw Jae Bin being Hoon’s biological father coming. Na Yoon could have been lying about what she implied but I don’t think she was because it suddenly makes the interactions between the three of them make some much sense. But at the same time it also really changes how I perceive the characters and their interactions.
I’m pretty stunned and confounded by Dong Hwa raising Hoon as his son knowing that he was really Jae Bin’s. That he apparently convinced Na Yoon to pretend they had an affair and let him raise Hoon as his son. I... don’t even know what to do with that. I mean I’m sure he thought he was doing what was best for Jae Bin but god, what a betrayal! It would be one thing if he did have a relationship with Na Yoon and wasn’t sure if he was the father, or if Jae Bin knew and agreed to allow him to be Hoon’s father but instead, well, he basically stole Jae Bin’s son from him. That’s kind of unforgivable.
• I also wonder about the Jae Bin/Na Yoon relationship – did it end because of that or was it because she wanted to leave and expand her career? God, I feel so sorry for Jae Bin. Meanwhile my sympathy for the other two is much lower.
• One thing I really loved in this episode was the Sun Hee/Ji Min scene at the beach. It was a lovely scene between them. I loved that Ji Min knew about the divorce already and was so understanding and supportive of her mother. I liked that her main worry was about whether she’d still be living with her mom. “Don’t cry mom. When you cry it makes me uneasy.” That made me wonder how many times has she’s heard her mom cry in the past?
Episode 13
• Na Yoon took a turn into unlikable this episode which was unfortunate because for the most part I have both liked her and felt very sympathetic towards her. We’ve seen some jealousy towards Sun Hee and how uncomfortable Hoon was in the last episode when she rested her hand on his shoulder made me want her to back off but mostly I’ve liked how they’ve portrayed her. But then at the end of the last episode we had her revealing her big secret in a fit of spite and this episode had her likeability go downhill. I found it really hard to have sympathy for her. She lashes out at Dong Hwa at the beginning and blames him for Jae Bin knowing the truth when she was the one to tell him. Because she was angry! In her confrontation with Jae Bin she says two three things that left me shaking my head.
1) “It’s because of Hong Sun Hee” = her trying to make him not wanting her about another woman instead of a huge betrayal and 15 year abandonment. Say what? Frankly he dealt far more calmly with her than I might have been able to and we even got him saying he does understand why she did what she did (... I don’t) but just doesn’t want her back in his life which I think is completely understandable.
2) “We have Hoon.” Um, no, no you don’t. Dong Hwa has Hoon, you chose not to have him (or Jae Bin) and took that choice from Jae Bin.
3) “How can you do this to me?” Seriously? Ugh.
Then she got in Sun Hee’s face and was just rude in tone and body language. Her apparently deciding to blame Sun Hee for everything wrong is completely ridiculous. She’s clearly really hurting, and has been since the beginning, but she’s lashing out and blaming everyone else for the consequences of her actions and it makes me want to shake her. She is so selfish and self-absorbed.
• Dong Hwa is being stoic, but when isn’t he, and he is clearly hurting as well. When he was watching them all fish in river I felt sad for him. But like with Na Yoon his justifications for what he did doesn’t inspire a lot of sympathy in me. He states that Jae Bin couldn’t have handled having a son then... and that’s pretty much his entire justification. However he’s not reacting by trying to blame others, or as if he can just make things go the way he wants like Na Yoon is currently doing, so it does make him more sympathetic than her. As does the fact that he clearly loves his son a lot and is afraid of losing him and he also loves his brother and is just as afraid of losing him as well.
It is a very complicated and difficult situation. Dong Hwa is Hoon’s father in every way that matters. He loves Hoon and is a good father to him. That can’t really be argued with. But ethically and emotionally he is in the wrong here. I’m sure in his mind his intentions were entirely selfless and for Jae Bin’s sake. It is clear that he loves his brother deeply. But he made a life decision for Jae Bin, a serious life changing one, without telling him. Jae Bin was young, and judging from now really immature, but guess what? Young and immature people have children all the time. Dong Hwa could have offered to raise Hoon as his son with Jae Bin’s full knowledge and permission or he could have just offered his support in helping to raise him. The point here being that it wasn’t his decision to make. He decided that he knew what would be best for Jae Bin but doing something with a ‘good’ reason doesn’t actually make it the right thing. In a way Jae Bin is just a sperm donor – except he was never given the chance to be anything more. Dong Hwa purposefully stole his brother’s child (regardless of his reasons.) Of course now the problem is – what the hell do they all do now?
• Poor Jae Bin. I’m not surprised that Sun Hee is so confused and worried because his personality has done a 180 degree turn. Jae Bin trying to bond with Hoon with this new knowledge was both sad and sweet.
