Episode 14

• I loved Sun Hee’s confrontation with her ex-husband. It is exactly what I’ve wanted since the beginning – no down cast eyes, no helpless anger, no tears, no allowing him to get the upper hand. Instead she remains cool and unmoved throughout their conversation (even when he uses the truth about Jae Bin’s past card), she smacks him upside the head and kicks him, she points out he isn’t her husband when he tries to play that card, she wonders how he can’t know what he did wrong, she threatens to go to Jung Sook and tells him not to mess with her. Basically she has him completely cowed and then stalks off with an “I’m busy”. It was completely delightful!

I love that he noticed the change in her as well and even wonders at her no longer being so timid. Then to add to that we get Na Yoon confronting Sun Hee about Jae Bin and once again, even in shock, she maintains her calm and refuses to allow Na Yoon to walk all over her (which she would have done earlier in the series). I loved that she wouldn’t even validate her ‘don’t take Jae Bin/interfere in our future’ with a response and instead told her that she should be asking Jae Bin and Hoon for forgiveness first. It appears that being around Jae Bin has been excellent for her self-esteem.

• Both brothers handled telling Hoon the truth badly. Jae Bin didn’t seem to think through how it would go or realise how badly Hoon would react to the truth. Of course he wouldn’t be overjoyed and accepting immediately. Dong Hwa, on the other hand, knew it wouldn’t go well and knew exactly when Jae Bin was going to tell Hoon the truth – so why wasn’t he home when they got back? He had to have known that Hoon would want to talk to him. Why they didn’t sit him down at home and tell him together I don’t know. Well, okay, I do – Jae Bin is angry and immature but Dong Hwa should have pushed more. Having an important discussion like that in a restaurant was never a good idea.

• I felt even sorrier for Dong Hwa in this episode. The moment when he saw Hoon after the truth came out and said “It doesn’t matter whose son you are. You... I love you most.” before completely breaking down made me teary-eyed. He made a mistake years ago, a huge mistake that was completely morally wrong, and now he is really paying for it. But he loves his son, and he loves his brother, and he cares about Sun Hee and all of that is all over this episode. When he watched the four of them at Sun Hee’s apartment, happily heading off to school, and then smiled he won me back over. I still think he was wrong and what he did was a betrayal but I’m not actually mad at him anymore. I think maybe because he is in so much pain but he’s not lashing out – he’s accepting the consequences of his actions, he’s thinking first of other people and their feelings, and that he’s happy to see them being happy even though he’s alone himself. Now I’m hoping he doesn’t end the series alone because that would be too sad.

I also liked him: helping Sun Hee find a new home and giving her a loan to pay for it, pushing Jae Bin into making a choice for his own happiness instead of letting Dong Hwa fix things for him, and then kneeling and begging Na Yoon not to go through with her press conference because of the people he needs to protect (along with giving her a sincere apology for hurting her).

• I really liked the Sun Hee/Ji Min talk. I liked Sun Hee explaining that adults are still people and make mistakes and have regrets. “But you know, I’m living my life for the first time, too. First times are like that — you wander and stumble because you’re unsure. So don’t be hurt when your mom does something wrong, but think, ‘It’s her first time too.’ Can you think that and forgive me?” That’s wonderful. And then Ji Min agrees and they hug and it was really sweet.
