The Last Scandal Thoughts

So there was a lot I liked about this finale and a number of things that I didn’t like but overall I found it very satisfying.
• The final scene of Sun Hee, Jae Bin, Ji Min and Hoon playing as a family in the park (and ignoring the curious stares) and then falling into a pile together, laughing was wonderful and mostly perfect. And I loved the final line being Jae Bin’s voice over thought “Sun Hee what would I have done if I hadn’t met you?”
• As an end to the Jae Bin/Sun Hee romance this was wonderful. Married and happy, and both of them getting the family I think they always desperately wanted. I loved the message that Sun Hee wrote beside Jae Bin’s (behind the picture) which I thought was really sweet. I liked also that she went to the press conference for him even though she was nervous and scared about the reporters.
• I was torn about how Jae Bin’s proposal went and how their wedding played out. The proposal itself was so ridiculous but also very... Jae Bin. It kind of felt out of character in that he is a romantic and he likes doing nice things for Sun Hee and so I would have expected something grandly romantic. He definitely seems the type to hide the ring in a piece of cake or glass of champagne, and to go on bend in knee to propose. But at the same time it was all so random and childish (teasing her about her offering herself to him way back at the beginning) but also sweet which is so Jae Bin. The wedding was pretty, I liked that Dong Hwa gave her away, she looked very pretty but... they was surrounded literally by his screaming fans. A dream come true for the fans but not the type of wedding I image Sun Hee would have wanted!
• My biggest issue with the episode was how Dong Hwa was dealt with. I mean, it does make sense to me that he wouldn’t want to be in the same house with the newlyweds – if he was in love with Sun Hee. I don’t think he really was though. I think he cared for her a lot and that it could have been love, and I think his angst over her was far more about ‘what ifs’. Certainly in the couple episodes before this final one it seemed as if he’d put aside what feelings he might have had and decided that it wasn’t meant to be. I guess I was wrong. I think my huge problem here is that I wanted all five of them living happily in the house together as one big happy family. If Dong Hwa didn’t want to be in the same house there is the guest house he could have moved in.
What it comes down to for me however is Hoon. He still considers Dong Hwa his dad, and probably always will, and so for Dong Hwa to move out and leave him, and going off his phone conversation with Sun Hee to not visit very often – it all feels very wrong. It was lovely the four of them being one big happy family but it’s also a lie because Dong Hwa should be there. He is an integral part of them. I mean Jae Bin even states that when he had his late night conversation with Ji Min. They’re family. By playing it the way they did, especially with the implication that Hoon and Dong Hwa haven’t seen each other in awhile, it reduces their relationship especially with Hoon then happily playing nuclear family with the others. It bothered me a lot. Dong Hwa is Hoon’s father! That bond can’t be just cast aside that easily nor should it. It was just very wrong.
I did like the implication that he might have a romance in his future (though again with the unfortunate implication – that now that he doesn’t have his son, he can have a romance. Whatever.)
• “In the future, don’t ever shrink back in front of me, or anyone else.” – Na Yoon to Sun Hee. I just really loved this.
• “Things will probably become a lot more difficult than you think. You’ll get little praise, jealousy when you do well, and criticism when you don’t. In any case, you will definitely receive more insults than praise.” Wow. That’s pretty on the mark. What Na Yoon just described here is pretty much exactly the reaction I’ve seen about some male celebrities’ girlfriends/wives. Supernatural’s fandom’s reaction to Jensen and Jared’s wives came immediately to mind but really this reaction is pretty much true across all fandom and fannish life – I recently read about the threats against Selena Gomez for the crime of dating Justin Beiber.
• This episode did a really good job of rehabilitating Na Yoon. I liked her advice to Sun Hee, her leaving Hoon in Sun Hee’s care until she can return and devote herself to being a mother, and I really liked them shaking hands goodbye. I loved that Dong Hwa brought Hoon to the airport to say goodbye to her. If we hadn’t gotten a goodbye scene between the two of them I would have been upset. I also like that his “Call me when you land” to her because to me it indicated him including her into their lives or else why would he care? I like the idea of her visiting and slowly becoming a part of the family in her own way.
• Hoon hugging Na Yoon really felt like he was doing it for her more than for himself which is such a Hoon thing to do.
• Hoon’s expression when he walked in on Jae Bin and Sun Hee and then did an about face made me laugh.
• “Father, I am never going to marry a man like you.” – Ji Min. I was pleased that she finally knew the truth about what kind of man her father was. I did feel bad for her when it became obvious that she was testing him not playing him like I originally thought.
• I was hoping for him to end up dumped by Jung Sook but this might actually be better. He is just as dejected and unhappy in getting what he thought he wanted but without the chance to start again and I’m rather pleased by that.
