Battleship Review
Aug. 30th, 2012 12:39 amIt was okay but only okay.
Issues
The fact that I was going 'why would they do that' or 'this makes no sense' while watching the movie is never a good sign.
+ We are shown over and over through-out the movie that the aliens only attack when attacked or to accomplish their goals. So why did that one alien left on the USS John Paul Jones keep trying to kill Hopper even though he was unarmed? Frankly the fact that he followed Hopper all the way to the deck is unbelievable in itself when he could have easily killed him at any time. The behaviour of that alien was just suddenly completely different, even to it's own behaviour in the minutes beforehand, because plot demanded it. It annoyed me.
+ What happened to all the sailors in the life boats after the USS John Paul Jones was destroyed? Why didn't Hopper take them to the USS Missouri with him? I loved the retired veterans volunteering but the disappearance of all the other sailors, and just after a scene with Mike reassuring Samantha by pointing out how many survivors there were, was head-scratching.
+ I don't understand why Hopper and Nagata had to shoot out the windows of the third alien ship - which its a spaceship you'd think it'd have bulletproof windows! - especially considering the complete overkill they did on it. They took out the previous two ships with far less fire power.
+ I don't know that having your hero inadvertently precipitate the death of his brother and hundreds of other soldiers out of recklessness, impulsiveness and inability to control his temper is really the best way to start a movie.
+ I'm not sure about the aliens. At first glance I like them but I don't know if they hold up. They're from a planet very much like ours so them being so incapacitated by sunlight is a little strange. It's reminding me of Signs.
+ I was rather annoyed that it was the scientist, randomly showing up, who saved Mike not Samantha.
Things I liked
+ The main plot actually works really well. We send out a signal, they send five ships and when their communications ship is destroyed along the way they create a force field around where are communication's array is and take it over. At it's base it is a simple and workable plot.
+ The veterans manning the USS Missouri.
+ The NOAA screen attack sequence which looked so much like the game was neat.
+ The fact that Hopper is actually a pretty bad acting Captain. Why the heck was he hunting down alien intruders? He was all over the ship when I assume he should have been on the bridge commanding things.
+ Admiral Shane's "No" when Hopper asks for his daughter' hand in marriage at the end. It amused me.
