Young and the Restless Thoughts
Sep. 25th, 2012 09:38 pmI'm still not watching Y&R regularly but I do catch bits and pieces of it now and them. I happened to catch the press conference on Friday and then had to check out yesterday and today's episodes. I am honestly... boggled about what is going on with show.
I keep thinking that the situation with Sharon can't get any worse and then the show completely exceeds my expectations. I really don't understand what they are doing with her. Or rather 'to' her. Sharon is being so despicable and her behaviour is both appalling and make no sense. The rushed funeral and her behaviour during it was bizarre and disgusting, then her agreeing to marry Tucker the same day... I have no words. Sharon has completely lost her mind. This is one of the most spectacular character meltdowns I've ever seen.
Except it's not so much a meltdown as it is straight out character assassination. This is not Sharon. She's certainly not perfect - she can be massively bitchy and has many faults - but everything to do with Victor's funeral was not her. Even moreso then her current weird behaviour would account for.
Even though it would make no sense I would seriously be willing to buy/go with Sharon having been replaced by a look-a-like a while ago because I have no idea how the character can be salvaged after all this. But I'm hoping TPTB come out with some really excellent justifications for her behaviour. ... Seriously I'd even accept 'brain tumour".
09-21:
+ I loved Sharon's mention of Dru but, um, what about Neil and Brad? Both of them were good friends to her as well. I barely remember Sam but wouldn't he count as a more recent friend?
+ It was nice to see Tucker a little affected by Sharon's sincere thanks to him even if it wasn't anywhere near enough to make him act differently. I liked Sharon/Tucker at the beginning of their interactions but at this point - not so much. I find Tucker's behaviour pretty - skeevy. Especially once they started sleeping together. I feel like he's getting a little of that character assassination as well. He's ruthless, sure, but his manipulation of her and the way he's using her has gone over a line.
+ Why the hell would Billy tell Vicki her father is dead in front of all those reporters? Not even only Vicki but all the Newmans. And before a body is even found. I realise it was all for the drama but it really sacrificed character - Billy's - to get it. Granted he's been all about the bad decisions lately so what's one more?
+ It also bugged me that all the reporters and cameras were on Nikki and the other Newman's and apparently none of them were bothering to pay attention to Victor's current wife. That makes no sense.
09-24:
+ "Redeemed by the love of a good woman." - Chelsea
"Well I guess that's one of the very few things I do have in common with my father." - Adam
This just bothered me. I'm still not buying them. Also even though Chelsea is okay she's definitely not as good a person as Hope was.
+ Hearing Abby call Brad by his name instead of as 'my dad' or 'other father' felt very wrong.
+ Poor Jack. He seriously can never win against Victor - even when Victor's not even there! So not only does he lose Nikki, though anyone could have seen that coming a mile away, he now loses Beauty of Nature as well. I don't see why it was so urgent for him to sell that very day though - couldn't he have gotten a loan? He knows a lot of rich people.
+ "What, did you set this up? Of course you did." - Sharon. What? Yes, Sharon, Victor caused an explosion and had a man killed to fake his death. WTH?
+ Sharon having the unknown man's body cremated was pretty despicable. What about his family? Not to mention it being illegal. (Which I'm sure will never be mentioned.)
09-25:
+ It was nice to see Tracy and I really liked her line about wanting to say goodbye to Colleen's heart.
+ Why is everything so rushed? In two days you have - an explosion, Victor's dead, his funeral, Sharon remarrying (well starting to) and Victor's back! Why is everything happening so fast? Because of Maria Bell being fired? Also the 'how' of everything doesn't really work either. The logic is certainly not strong with this storyline. Other issues include:
- Sharon knows that Victor isn't dead so why the hell would she agree to marry Tucker knowing it would be invalidated?
- Why the hell would Tucker ask Sharon to marry him the day after Victor's death was announced? I'm not sure how that would help him get control of NE and it could only damage his (and Sharon's) reputation. Also his relationship with Devon is much better now - isn't he at all concerned about what Devon will think?
- Why is everyone acting like Sharon is getting everything? I'm sure Victor has a will. Why would Tucker think Victor would leave the company to Sharon and not say divided between his kids?
- Did Sharon consider Noah's feelings at all? Sigh - yet another reason to throw 'bad mother' at her, I guess. And while I realise she is pissed at or hates a lot of the people who loved Victor I can't believe how cavalierly she was acting in the face of their grief. As in I don't believe she would.
+ "This is going to be a great day. I bury one husband and get a shiny new one!" - Sharon. Okay, I laughed.
+ I have this pretty hopeless wish that Victor won't be throwing Sharon under a bus now that he's back, that he'll recognise that something is wrong with her and try and help instead, but I'm not holding my breath. I've loved the Victor/Sharon friendship since the beginning and I hate what's happened to it this year. I would hate even more if all of this caused them to completely turn on each other. I don't believe that Victor would completely turn against Sharon but then I didn't see Sharon's behaviour coming either so who knows.
At the very least I am crossing my fingers so hard that he takes Sharon back to the ranch for a private talk instead of there being a huge fight at her 'wedding'. I know this is probably a hopeless wish as well. I realise that she deserves some serious comeuppance, especially on the part of his family whom she just put through hell and then basically mocked, but... I really don't want to see it. I don't want to watch her humiliated. Possibly because I'm having such a hard time blaming her for her actions when it's clear that she's losing it/TPTB have lost it.
Also if everyone turns against Sharon, leaving her with no supporters, after the debacle of Phyllis getting all that support back when the whole attempted murder truth came out I'm not going to be happy. Granted Sharon has done a lot to actively push people away recently so the situation is different. But again Sharon's behaviour feels distinctly out-of-character and she's just completely lost it that it feels like her actions can't be held against her to the same degree as Phyllis's - whose current difficulties feel like some long-overdue just desserts.
I've found it weird how everyone seems to be just accepting of Sharon's increasingly out-there behaviour when it seems clear that something is really wrong with her so I'm hoping that as everything falls apart for her she will get some support. I'm trying to think of people who could help her:
Nick was surprisingly... caring about her this month considering all that was happening but I'm thinking the funeral debacle will put an end to that.
Adam is a better possibility despite his disavowals of any further interest in her and her choices. I don't believe him. Plus he knows what it is to make mistakes/bad choices (more serious than hers) and she forgave him and was there for him.
Neil and Jack might also be possibilities. I loved the Neil/Sharon friendship, the mention of Dru reminded me of that, and it be nice to have her have a friend to support her that she hasn't been in a romantic relationship with.
I have never been happier about a change in a show's PTB.
