The Vampire Diaries 3x17 Review

• How the show handled Caroline - not anything about her, she was fabulous, but rather the way she was used in the episode made me angry. It’s finally revealed who killed her father and she has basically nothing to do with that storyline. In fact I’m not even sure she knows that Alaric is the killer. All we know for sure is that Elena explained something was wrong with Alaric and that Bonnie was going to do a spell to help him. I lean towards her not knowing if only because she seemed so calm and collected after the call. There was no angst, she wasn’t upset for personal reasons. They find Bill’s killer and all we get is “I went through the same thing once. With my dad. But it didn’t really work out.” and then an impassioned “Nobody is better off without their parents.” to Abby.
I’m not sure which would bother me more. If she does know about Alaric’s role in Bill’s death then that means that we didn’t get to see her reaction to the news, or how she dealt with it and that pisses me off. But if she doesn’t know that means Elena didn’t tell her and that makes me angry as well. Because then it means that Elena used Caroline to save the life of her father’s killer without letting Caroline know what she was doing.
• I think a big reason why I didn’t love this episode was because I kept being very annoyed with Elena and I hate feeling like that about her.
- Once she knew that the ring’s effects didn’t go away even after the ring was taken off why the hell didn’t she send Stefan back to the house? Or at the very least she should have called Meredith to warn her. That just seemed excessively dumb.
- Calling Caroline and telling her that “something terrible has happened to Alaric” was kind of insensitive. We don’t get any implication that Elena even realises that one of those people Alaric killed was Caroline’s dad. There is nothing in this episode that indicates to me that Elena is upset or worried about Caroline.
- Jeremy has a ring! Why wasn’t Elena immediately going to him with Bonnie so she can magic the crap out of that thing? Why would she be satisfied with Jeremy saying he hasn’t been talking with Alaric? That makes no sense. I mean Alaric didn’t even realise he was the killer until Meredith told him. Why is Elena even taking a chance with this? Also I’m surprised that Bonnie didn’t think of it either.
• Caroline was amazing. I loved her supporting Bonnie. I liked her trying to explain things to Jaime and then telling him to get over himself. I loved her confrontation with Abby. Everything she said was perfect, and I loved her pleading with Abby to stay for Bonnie’s sake. Caroline really is the best.
• A Bonnie/Jaime/Caroline triangle could be interesting. I enjoyed both their scenes with him in this episode.
• I loved the Elena/Bonnie scene. I loved the hug. I am so happy they are friends again.
“Please say you forgive me.” – Elena
“Of course I do.” – Bonnie
I do wish that Bonnie had offered her forgiveness before Elena had asked though.
• I did like Elena’s belief in Alaric and her single-mindedness in trying to save him and her sensing something wrong with Alaric and lying to him.
• I liked Elena’s phone call to Jeremy. It was actually really nice to see him again. Apparently absence does make the heart grow fonder.
• I didn’t like the Sage/Damon/Rebekah stuff. Rebekah actually joining them, two people she hates even if she’s attracted to one of them, is sad. I feel bad for her but damn she’s a thousand years old and she’s only spent 90 years of that daggered in a coffin. Also this line: ”Rebekah may be an Original but she’s a girl. You find her weakness and I’ll walk right in.” Ugh.
- Weirdly though I did like Sage more then in the previous episode.
• I loved Damon fooling Sage and Rebekah. Rebekah wasn’t really wrong when she said that Damon’s “grand plans always seem to get ruined” so this was nice.
• “The world doesn’t stop because you’re an accidental serial killer.” – Damon. LOL
• The Alaric/Meredith confrontation and chase through the house was very creepy and well done.
• Damon’s confrontation with Sage at the end made me shake my head. She’s 900 years old – I really don’t think threatening her was the best idea. He could have sold his anger without making an enemy of her.
• I find it hard to believe that Stefan would immediately go for the little bit of blood in the kitchen and not the bleeding human in the bathroom. That is a lot more blood, it’s fresher and can’t he hear her anyway?
• I loved Stefan controlling his hunger and saving Meredith.
• “...Alaric has a psychopathic alter ego.” – Stefan. But is it really? Both Samantha and now Alaric seem compelled to kill Council members and that note to Jeremy implies something a lot more than Alaric’s ‘dark urges’ coming out. If that was all it was he’d be killing anyone. Instead their actions are directed. This all points to something a lot more specific than people acting on their worst thoughts.
• I actually did believe Meredith’s stated reasons for helping Alaric in this episode which was nice since she’s been the weak link in this whole storyline.
• So since the fights Alaric were in were real then the restraining orders Isobel had on him had to have been real as well. I really wish the show would tell us about those.
