The Vampire Diaries 4x01 Review

iariaGrowing Pains
• I loved the ensemble voice over.
• I was a bit disappointed with Elena's transition. ND did great in showing the emotions and the disorientation but I guess I really wanted Elena to sit down and think about/talk to someone about whether to choose to be a vampire or to die, what it would mean to be a vampire, and how things have changed for her between 4x01 and 2x20. We don't really get that. She freaks out at the beginning, clinging to the hope that Bonnie could fix everything, and by the end she is calm and accepting about her new status. I wanted the in between (preferably with Caroline) and didn't feel satisfied with what the show gave us.
- I did love Elena crushing that light bulb with her bare hand.
• I feel like I should write something about all the Stefan/Elena/Damon stuff happening but I'm not sure how I even feel and I don't know where to start so... maybe the next episode.
• I love that the first thing Elena did upon turning was to attack Damon in order to save Matt.
• "I need my sister not another one of them." - Jeremy Yikes. I can understand him being completely done with vampires but even as a vampire she will still be Elena and Jeremy knows that. I wonder if he might not be going to a darker/anti-supernatural place this year? Either way I'm excited to see how his and Elena's relationship plays out.
• Still interested in and looking forward to a Dark!Bonnie arch. Also - having a daylight ring waiting, and willing to die for the chance to save her friends = Bonnie as the bestest friend.
• I can't believe that Sheila came back only to be killed off again. Even though she's already dead! Ugh. What happened to her? Was her soul (or whatever) completely destroyed? How about instead she's trapped somewhere and Bonnie will have to go on a journey to save her? I like that better. God, poor Bonnie.
• I'm really glad that Tyler knew about and agreed to the body possession.
• I buy Klaus only being able to get one of the girls out the truck and having to make a choice just as much as I did with Stefan in 3x22. He's a vampire. There was more than enough time to break Rebekah's restraints at the very least.
• Poor Rebekah. I felt really bad for her (even though she just tried to kill Elena and innocent Matt). I'm kind of hoping that she slowly becomes a part of the Gilbert/Salvatore made-family now.
• I liked that Elena and Stefan's heartfelt goodbyes got to Rebekah. All she wants is love - family and friendship and acceptance - so it makes sense to me that it would get to her. Especially after Klaus left her to the humans. I liked her helping Stefan to kill a guard in order to save Elena.
• I've always thought that Klaus did love Rebekah best of his siblings (going to the dance for her was sweet) but leaving her in the truck was inexcusable. Then that final scene... he cared more about the blood than Rebekah. He totally doesn't deserve Rebekah's love and devotion.
• Even beyond the grossness of Caroline making out with Klaus when she thought he was Tyler I didn't like that scene because - what the hell Caroline? They should be running for their lives, they should be checking on their friends, there are a lot of things they should be doing. Caroline can be overjoyed that Tyler is alive without her having to immediately stop everything to have sex with him.
• I have no idea what was happening with the Pastor at the end. Was he Compelled to kill everyone? What was with all that talk about "we are a beginning"?
• I'd think the Council would make it easier for vampires to get blood from the hospital. I mean for every blood bag eaten that's one person who's not.
• The Council being competent for a change is interesting, or it could have been if most (?) of them hadn't been killed off at the end, but how do they have the power to fire Liz and especially Carol? As the mayor Carol was elected by the town so it doesn't make sense that the Council could get rid of her that easily.
