This was really not what I was expecting based on the movie. The movie was fun and funny and unfortunately I just didn't get that from this book. This volume was - boring.

1) The biggest disappointment was Adèle herself. I don't think she actually does anything in the entire volume. She mostly wanders from place to place, meeting people and learning information... which she doesn't do anything with. I'm trying to think of an instance of her actually propelling the plot forward or getting the better of someone or anything and all I can come up with is that she a) kidnapped Edith - but she did it off-screen, and b) she figures out the secret passage - except she figures it out by seeing someone else using it.

- I also didn't really get any sense of this Adèle's personality. She came off distant, kind of rude and uncaring. She wasn't anywhere near as engaging or interesting as movie!Adèle. She does appear to be a master of disguise and pretty lucky.

- I'm not even that sure what Adèle does or what her plans were. I think she stole those bags from the banker with the other guys? Maybe? I have no idea.

- ALSO - a huge negative for me is that she keeps being saved by guys. The crocodile pit, being shot at the park, at the museum, on the Eiffel tower... we never see her save herself the way movie!Adèle does. It's just her being saved by guys over and over. It was super annoying.

2) Considering that the book is named after Adèle she is actually in it far less than I ever would have expected. There is a huge cast of supporting male characters (who for the most part look very similar) that actually take up most of the pages. The book is all guys all the time.

There are only three other women that show up in the book at all - Edith, random extra and actress Clara Benhardt. The random woman is in one panel and wonders if Adèle is all right. Clara is in the second story and only gets a couple of lines.

Edith gets the most page time of the three - and she actually gets to do things. In fact I ended up more interested in her than Adèle! I mean she's kidnapped but unbowed, is saved and works with the person who set her free to find the murderer of her brother, flies her father's flying machine to save a condemned man from the Guillotine... and then dies off-screen flying it over the channel. But still.

3) Boring. Did I mention that? Because it was.

4) The info dumps. Ugh. We kept getting a page worth of one character laying out everything that had happened and why. Like a bad guy would get Adèle at gunpoint and then randomly lay out why everything had just happened. Not impressed.

So disappointing. I won't be reading more.
