Untouchable Series Thoughts
Jan. 31st, 2011 11:11 pmI liked it but it did take me a couple episodes to get into. If it had been one of the longer series I think I might have ended up stalling on it. I’m really glad I finished it though because the overarching mystery was actually really good and I loved the reveal at the end. This series is definitely worth watching unspoiled.
• I liked Ryoko but she was just so... socially unaware. I found it really embarrassing. Her stalking of Shiro, her awkwardness and naivety with anything to do with romance, the way that she kept jumping into situations mouth first regardless of how anyone would take it (like confronting the sisters in front of all the other reporters) – it all just made me wince.
• I did love how tenacious she was, how determined to give justice to people wronged. There were many instances where I loved her – like in episode 4 when she told the hostage taker that all the hostages agreed that he should be the one to leave the room. Hee. While it made him angry I thought it was pretty clever. That said Ryoko really has absolutely no sense of self-preservation does she?
• We got a bit of romance though it wasn't the focus of the show. Which actually I liked.
- Ryoko’s obsessive crush on Shiro which I wouldn't call a romance. I thought at the beginning that he would end up falling for her so I was surprised when he never did. I like that because she was basically stalking him and it kept making me want to hide behind my hands. I did like that he did respect her by the end.
- Ryoko/Takafuji which was okay but I think it needed more time for me to really ship it. I really liked their partnership.
- Misuzu/Shiro also had a bit of a romance but are they even together at the end?
• I wish we’d gotten more Misuzu and Misuzu/Ryoko scenes.
• My big question at the end was whether Ryoko was the new Chief at the magazine. I wish that had been cleared up better.
• My favourite part was how the whole Ryoko/Koji situation played out. I didn’t figure out he was Anonymous until the final episode but it made sense.
I really found their interactions after the truth came out fascination. Despite being a complete psycho he was clearly still loyal/loved Ryoko enough that I don’t think he would have killed her. Ryoko was loyal and loved him enough that even knowing the truth she couldn’t kill him and she cried for him. When he was being lead away she glomped onto his back and told him “You’re my only family.” That and him putting his hand on top of hers really moved me.
It also reminded me of one of those true crime series I read about where a man killed his sister and tried to kill his parents and still they keep visiting him in prison because ‘he was their only child’. I feel like it’s uncommon in fiction to show that sort of reaction.
Koji killed their parents and a large number of people, including her friends, and while she didn’t forgive him she also didn’t turn away from him in complete horror. He was her brother, her only family for over a decade, who had always been there for her. It’s understandable. I would have been interested in watching a second season with him returning and her dealing with it.
