Mainly meh. I wasn't really a fan and I doubt I'll watch the sequel. There were a number of logical inconsistencies that irritated me, a couple things I really didn't like and I think I just wasn't interested in the story - a boy who is super special and better than everyone else and saves the day by being awesome.
First, I did like the gods being huge in their normal shape and the way Poseidon could dissolve into water.
• Percy does almost everything - he kills the minotaur and Medusa, he's the one to get free of the Lotus flowers first (even though I think it make far more sense for it to have been Annabeth, he fought and defeated Luke by himself. And this isn't really that big a surprise because this is his hero movie but it irritated me all the same.
• The end of the flag battle kind of annoyed me? Percy defeating Annabeth, only the second time using a sword bugged me I get it he's the hero. But then the way he smugly walked up to the flag made me want to hit him upside the head.
• How is Medusa alive when Perseus killed her thousands of years ago? It seems clear it's the same Medusa so - she never really dies?
• The depiction of Hades and the afterlife irritated me so much. I didn't actually make the connection when Hades first appeared but when Percy and the others entered the underworld and it was basically the Christian hell it was like 'oh, yeah, Hades is actually Satan'. If they're going with this whole Greek theme they should damn well stick to it. The underworld was not hell and just ugh.
- I also wasn't overly fond of how Persephone and the Persephone/Hades relationship was done.
- Oh, and of course once again Hades was a bad guy.
• Sally Jackson staying with Gabe for over a decade to protect Percy creeps me out so much. Beyond the horrible and disrespectful way he treated her you know that it wasn't a sex free relationship. He wouldn't have stayed with her. And based on what we see of their relationship it's clear she doesn't actually like him. It's just - ew. Wrong and gross, and I know a mother's love but ugh.
• Also it doesn't even make sense to me. She stayed with Gabe because he smelled and it covered the scent of Percy's demi-god blood. What?
• Percy telling Annabelle to distract the hydra while he got the pearl was really dumb considering he was the hydra's main target. Also what exactly were they doing while he was trapped behind Athena's statue because it seems like nothing.
• We don't really get why Zeus was so certain that Percy was the thief. Percy says he's being set up but how exactly did Luke manage that. They should have shown us the evidence because there are hundreds of demi-gods around the world and it seemed weird that he was so sure it was Percy.
• Percy asking Poseidon at the end why he left him made me shake my head - he was told earlier that Zeus had made a law banning the gods from interacting with their demi-god children. He really needs to work on his listening skills.
• Are we supposed to think that Percy is the only child of Poseidon? Because I can't buy that. I have a hard time even believing that Percy is his only modern child.
• Poseidon's explanation that he was so happy with Percy and Sally that he was neglecting his work and becoming human as a result didn't really work for me. I think it bothered me so much because the unfortunate implication seems to be that this was the first time this had ever happened and thus he had never felt that way before about any of his other children? That none of the other gods had ever loved their children that much? Sorry but no. That's taking Percy's ubber specialness too far.
• I think I would have bought Luke's motivation more if he did it all because of Zeus's decree that prevented him from knowing his father.
• I'm not sure why they threw in the step-father on TV fingering Percy as a kidnapper since being a fugitive never actually matters. It's mentioned and that's it.
• Why exactly does Percy have a satyr protector when no one else seems to?
• The shoes from Hermes are supposedly difficult to use - except Percy has no really problem using them and the second time he tries he manages a protracted fight across New York's skies.
• So the Gods aren't omnipotent in this movie. Because shouldn't Zeus know Percy was right outside one of his entrances to Olympus?
It's entirely possible that I'm being too hard on the movie. I think if I'd loved any of the characters I would have been able to look over a lot of things that bugged me, especially the nitpicky ones, but I didn't. It's weird because I've watched bad B-movies and enjoyed them but this - meh.
