Snow White and the Huntsman Review
May. 8th, 2013 11:35 pmIt was okay.
• The fight between Snow and Ravenna at the end felt a bit quick but then Snow was completely out classed. I do love that in the end it did come down to the two of them and Snow had no help from anyone else. I also liked that it was the maneuver that the Huntsman taught her, the only self-defense she knew, that allowed her to kill Ravenna. That worked.
• I wish that there had been more of a relationship/interactions between Ravenna and Snow White. Ravenna kept her captive for years after all.
• One thing I loved was how much women were a part of this world. I’m not sure I can explain this well but in a lot of movies there will be a couple women but it often feels like the world is mostly populated by men. But in this one we had the queen, and Greta, and the women of the village, plus the main two.
• With Snow’s presence healing both people and the land I had hoped that she was magical herself and that we’d get an epic magical showdown between Snow and Ravenna. A little sad that didn't happen.
• I enjoyed Charlize Theron as Ravenna. I liked her sympathetic backstory and the fact that it wasn't used to excuse her actions.
• I wanted to learn more about the fairies and how Snow was healing the land. Is it something she could learn to direct and thus heal people?
• I really liked that the interactions between the Huntsman and William played out completely free of jealousy or competition. That they got along fairly well.
• I liked that Snow White didn’t end up with either guy at the end.
• When William kissed Snow a tear trailed down her cheek and then the same thing happened when the Huntsman kissed her. I wonder if it wasn’t the Huntsman who woke her but rather that she needed both of them to kiss her in order to wake because her heart was torn between them?
• I liked Snow's escape from the castle.
• Nitpick: all the dead (?) women lying on the floor at the end. Ravenna appears to have drained them to regain her power and health... except that’s not how her power works. She drains them of their youth – Greta survived but was old. The many women in that scene were all still young and apparently dead.
