Living as a Woman... That’s the Way It Is

“It’s already the 21st century, Dal Ja. The times have changed. Shouldn’t girls be treated differently now?” – Seon Joo I liked her pointing this out. Things change, gender roles have changed (as they should). I also liked her advice “Dal Ja, love needs trust. Trust him.” She’s given some bad advice (the horrible ‘pretend to be unaffected’) but this was really good.

• I was really glad that Tae Bong bought the ring before all the pressure to get married started so that it was completely his idea.

• I liked that during their second talk Tae Bong showed that he understood that Dal Ja has a very overactive imagination however you’d think he’d get that her having no information is far worse as far as prompting her drama queen traits. And as far as they go I was very amused by her child invasion nightmare. Also – does that mean she actually wants five children? Because she seemed pretty happy with the five original ones and it wasn’t until they multiplied that she freaked out. Five is still a lot of kids.

“I’m here for you. I’m worried. I know I’m insignificant in your eyes. But to me you are significant. If you need me call me any time. Any time. Even if it’s just to be a drinking pal.” – Ki Joong. Honestly I can’t believe how much more I like him compared to the first half of the series. I found him pretty boring and eh for quite awhile there but he’s slowly gotten more and more endearing – from his cleaning to his obsession with manhwa – once he started pursuing Dal Ja I began to like him a lot more and I love how supportive he is now. He knows he has no chance with her, that she’s in love with someone else, but he cares about her and sincerely wants to be there for her. How could I not love him for that? I wish he had a viable love interest so he could get a happy ending too.

• The dinner was kind of painful for me to watch. I found myself getting irritated at Dal Ja. I was mentally yelling at her to do something instead of just sitting there quietly and eating. I don’t think she should have gotten into it with Soo Jin nor been snide towards her. Instead she should have added her own conversation – complimenting Tae Bong’s family, asking about their jobs, complimenting Tae Bong for that matter. There is a lot she could have said and certainly by involving herself in the conversation or starting one she would have far more effectively shown herself as unbothered by Soo Jin (even though she was clearly seething with jealousy and anger). It’s not all Dal Ja here either – Tae Bong was acting in the exact same way minus the eating until Soo Jin gave him food. He could have talked to Dal Ja, or started a new subject instead of just sitting there. I kind of wanted to shake them both. But at the same time I was very sympathetic to Dal Ja and her clear unease and her sense of inferiority with regards to Soo Jin (in pretty much every way) and how very uncomfortable she was throughout. Plus her self-control towards Soo Jin and not throwing her coffee in her face should be commended. But seriously – I want her to go take some lessons from Seon Joo.

“Today I don’t want to hear you say anything.” – Tae Bong to his mom. I actually really loved this because it shows that he is angry at her – and I loved that we get to see that anger – but he’s still being polite to her (well, relatively).

• I think the show was trying to lead us into thinking that Yeom Shin wanted Tae Bong to marry Soo Jin, everything was playing to that during the first part of her speech, but I never considered for a second that she was talking about anyone but Dal Ja. Her reaction to Soo Jin telling her that she thought her and Tae Bong had a chance and they would get back together was not happy. I think that was actually the moment she realised that she did in fact want Tae Bong to marry Dal Ja. But even without that reaction, or her look at Dal Ja during dinner, the fact that Soo Jin has been in the show for only a couple episodes and this is also the first time Yeom Shin has interacted or mentioned her left no doubt in my mind. I may have wondered if they had had a relationship prior to this, if Yeom Shin had been comparing Dal Ja to her all this time, basically if Soo Jin had actually been a serious secondary girl rival to Dal Ja. But she wasn’t. All that said – I loved the dragging out of her speech, and her wanting Tae Bong to get married immediately, and them misunderstanding until she specifically brings up Dal Ja (“I was afraid that like this Dal Ja would die of old age, idiot” LOL). Also I liked that Shin Wook and grandfather were in agreement with her. Man, I wish Dal Ja had been there for that, too!

• Oh this show. Of course Dal Ja would suggest breaking up just as he was proposing. But you know I don’t think if he actually had managed to get the proposal out things would have been all better. She’s now so worried about pressuring him into marriage and just came from her mother telling her that she’d just done it, plus he hasn’t even said that he loves her. I was actually expecting him to propose and for her to say no (because she thinks he’s pressured into it.) I felt horrible for both of them. Dal Ja tells him “I’m... really tired” and you know, she looks it and she sounds it. She just seems so very – weary and drained, and I want to hug her. She looked like she just wanted to break down and cry but was too tired to even do that. I can kind of understand where she’s coming from here. She has been so stressed and unhappy and freaked out and she isn’t even sure he loves her. Poor Dal Ja. And poor Tae Bong. I loved his smile when he and Soo Jin left his parent’s home; he was so happy and seemed... free. Then Dal Ja dropped her little bomb and his face – it just frozen and you see him swallow and I think that’s what got me, the swallow.
