The Vampire Diaries 4x16 Review

I Liked
• It was nice to see Elena having fun even considering the circumstances.
• I actually really liked the Elena/Caroline fight. Elena was being a passive-agressive bitch to Caroline all episode and it's clear that Elena's had some serious issues with Caroline that she's been repressing. With her switch off Elena is finally letting that out - the anger, the resentment. I'm hoping that eventually this is leading to Elena and Caroline actually talking to each other.
• Stefan/Caroline were lovely. I especially loved them having fun at the party.
• Caroline popping into the room at the beginning in only a bathrobe was great.
• "What? It's nothing you guys haven't seen before." - Elena LOL. Also it made me think Elena/Caroline thoughts.
• Caroline's 'Tyler plan', call him everyday and keep him up to date so it'll be like he never left when he returns, was sweet.
• I liked Liz's moment at her office when she gets snappish and then teary-eyed over what's happened to Miranda Gilbert's family. So Miranda was Liz's best friend, and we know Abby/Miranda were really close... it was like Miranda/Liz/Abby were the previous generation's Elena/Caroline/Bonnie.
• "Come on Elena just dance with us." - Caroline. My reaction to this was pretty much: YES! And then she snarked off and I was sad.
Other
• Everyone kept saying that Elena had “turned off her emotions’ but she clearly still felt all sorts of emotions. What she turned off was her humanity - her morality and compassion. Not the same thing.
• "It takes allies. A network of people willing to do anything for you. Including chase down loose ends to their death. It's how Katherine escaped you all this time." - Hayley Huh. I mean it's a good explanation for how Katherine has survived all those centuries except for how that's totally not Katherine as we know her. I can only think of two instances of Katherine having a sincere relationship with an ally - Pearl/Emily and Isobel - and with the first she completely left Pearl to die. Because that is Katherine's modus operandi. She's good at charming people and manipulating them but then she inevitable turns on them by killing them or leaving them behind.
• Elena holding her own, and beating Caroline in the end, didn't bother me at all. And not even just because Elena was trained by Ric, though that's a good point, but because it actually hasn't been that long since Caroline was turned. A year at most? I think that puts them on fairly even footing. Also despite Stefan telling her to just break Elena's neck I think there was still a little hesitance on Caroline's part to hurting Elena.
• "I brought this into your life." - Stefan Uh... by saving her life? Also as the doppelganger, who's family were vampire hunters and who's best friend is a Bennett witch, no Stefan you really didn't.
• I liked Elena's smile when Stefan brought up the dive bar. I wonder how things would have gone different if he had gone through with that. If instead of trying to control Elena he'd just gone along with her?
• You know, I was wondering why Stefan wasn't just throwing everyone out or calling Liz to break up the party when I realised - doesn't Elena technically own the Salvatore Manor? It was deeded to her back in season 2 and I don't remember if it was ever deeded back.
Didn't Like
• All the Klaus scenes. I don't care. They were very boring and they just didn't make sense to me. Why didn't Klaus kill Damon as soon as he saw him? More importantly why was he being so patient with Hayley and trying to charm her instead of just compelling the truth out of her? Or torturing it out of her. I can't see any reason why he would play nice with her.
• Damon, Stefan and Caroline making decisions about Elena's life for her again instead of asking her what she wants.
• Damon using the sire bond more then just to keep Elena from killing.
• This is totally my issue but even though I loved seeing Elena have fun again I kept finding myself wondering what other people were thinking of her considering her brother had died only days (?) before.
• "You fight like a girl." - Elena to Caroline ... >:( What even is that show? You are better than that. I'm choosing to ignore that ever happened.
