I loved this episode. I haven't felt this into an episode in awhile. It's the high point of the season thus far. This is not that unexpected considering the show brought back my two favourite reoccurring characters.

Loved

• Elijah! ♥ So very happy to see him again.

"You don't have a smart brother. Turns out I'm just as stupid as the rest of you." Elijah
"Why don't you just give me the cure so I can judge you silently elsewhere." - Rebekah

I really loved this exchange. Elijah being all self-deprecating! Rebekah being a bratty little sister.

• Katherine! Okay, so I'm still a little miffed about Jeremy's death but it was still fabulous to see her again and she was still her usual fabulous, one-step ahead self.

• Rebekah and Elena working together ♥ Still love it and want it to stay. Rebekah saving Elena was great. I loved Rebekah's smiles at Elena in the diner as they tag teamed Katherine. They, especially Rebekah, were having so much fun and it was great to watch.

• Really all the Elena/Katherine/Rebekah scenes were excellent and I enjoyed the Katherine/Damon/Stefan/Rebekah scenes as well.

• Everyone's 'ugh' reaction to Katherine/Elijah, lol. ♥ That was delightful.

• I loved the Elijah/Elena scenes.

- "I've missed you" - Elijah. Hmm. So when exactly did he figure out that Elena was playing Katherine? The kiss, the lack of knowledge of the cure or the ring? I could buy any of the three really. At the very least he had to be suspicious after the kiss which makes his words to her have a slightly ambiguousness to them.

- "If anything whatsoever happens to Katherine I will descend upon Elena." - Elijah. Okay, 1) I adored Elena's bored leaning against the wall during this. Hee. Someone is not at all worried. 2) "descend upon"? That's not a very specific threat, you know? What exactly does he mean there? Because I kind of took it in an, um, sexy way, which was probably not intended!

- "You're both idiots. - Elena." LOL. I actually did literally laugh at that.

"She lied." - Elijah
"I hate to say I told you so but - duh." - Elena

Hee. I think this episode's Elena is my favourite Elena this season.

• Katherine having a whole town compelled was great. Excellent idea. This episode really showcased how smart she is - the tricks in compelling the townspeople, still on vervain, her fake 'cure' decoy.

• I kind of liked Elena killing the waitress? As an opening move to get the Salvatore's to back off it felt very Katherine-like in a way. Plus I liked it because this Elena doesn't care so it would feel off if she never killed. That would bug me.

• My inner Elena/Elijah shipper loved that Elena not only kept Elijah's letter but she memorised it as well.

• The back-to-back scenes of Elena/Rebekah bickering and Stefan/Damon bickering at the beginning amused me. I really enjoyed Stefan ragging on Damon.

• I like Elena's new hairstyle but Katherine's hair was gorgeous.

Other

• This episode was so much about how Elena, Rebekah and even Katherine are just trying to have control over their own lives and the freedom to make their own choices. Both Elena and Rebekah even get to straight out say 'let me live my own life'. And, oh do I so want them to.

• On Elena killing the waitress - I'm neutral on the killing itself. It's not really the worst thing she's ever done (imo) and this time she has the excuse of having her switch flipped. Blaming it on the Salvatore's is ridiculous of course but she isn't feeling things like guilt or compassion right now, while the brothers are, so okay.

Of course when she un-flips it she's going to be pretty upset. Maybe we could get a scene of her, Caroline and Bonnie comforting each other - sleepover!

• Is Katherine telling the truth or is she lying? Or maybe some of both? It's Katherine so my immediate thought is lying of course but... maybe she does care for Elijah? It appears she does but then - Katherine. I keep going back and forth on her truthfulness with him, and on whether she gave him the real 'cure'.

• A part of me wishes we could have had this episode without the Salvatore's getting involved. Elena/Rebekah vs Katherine (with Elijah as the wild card)? That would have been great too. The potential for Elena/Rebekah/Katherine to team up? I would have loved that. I guess, despite loving what we got, I think an episode with just the ladies doing their thing is something I would have loved a bit more.

• I figured it wasn't going to happen but I really wanted that last shot of Elena/Rebekah in 4x17 to be an indication of how they were going to be. BFFs forever! Still not upset with what we got and hopefully the show keeps building on it.

• Sigh, I ship Elijah/Elena so of course the show gives me Elijah/Katherine. That said I did like what we saw of them, I love that he hasn't given up on Katerina after all this time and I'm interested to see where the show is going with them.

• Oh, man, is the trio of Elena/Katherine/Rebekah has to be the Salvatore brothers least favourite ever or what?

"So, if I was a paranoid, distrustful sociopath..." - Damon ... sometimes he just doesn't listen to what comes out of his mouth does he? Because I'm pretty sure that at multiple times in his life that's been him.

• Wait, so did Damon really try to kill 'human' Rebekah, or was he suspicious about the 'cure'? I notice Stefan didn't try and save her either.

• I found it a little weird that Elijah just left dead Elena there with Katherine and far weirder that Katherine apparently just left her there.

• The Elena/Elijah kiss reminded me so much of that first Damon/Elena kiss that was actually Damon/Katherine.

Disliked

• OMG, Damon and Stefan! You do in fact have a point about this not really being Elena and that she will regret this eventually but will you freaking stop trying to control/run her life!

• The lack of mention of Kol bothered me. Elijah brings up that he knows what it's like to lose a brother to Elena - and there is no mention of Kol. No mention of the fact that Elena had a role in Finn's death and then actively killed Kol with Jeremy. Does he even know about Kol's death?

• Why the hell would Caroline ever trust Klaus's word? Sure, she points out later that he wants to be her friend so he wouldn't want to ruin that - except that is a hell of a lot of trust to put in considering his idea of 'mercy' for her sake was to give Tyler a head start.

• Also Caroline was taking a big chance in not removing the white ash piece considering that she and a big chuck of her friends would die if Klaus did.
