Movie Thoughts
Oct. 28th, 2013 04:08 pmTwo movies I've watched recently:
Now You See Me - I loved it. I don't really have much to say about it but I really enjoyed it. It was a fun movie. I liked the characters a lot and I loved trying to figure out what was going on. The tricks were interesting even when I knew how they were pulled off. I'm glad that they're making a sequel.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation - I had low expectations here but decided to watch anyway because of The Rock and Storm Shadow... and unfortunately my expectations were mostly met. I was very meh about this.
What I did like were:
1) the Storm Shadow storyline which I felt was well done. I loved the actor and the character in the first movie and I was pleased with how things played out here. I really liked the end especially: Storm Shadow felt betrayed and has since done horrible things - nothing is forgiven and certainly not forgotten. But they aren't necessarily enemies any longer and it's left open for amends to be made.
2) I liked the sequence where Cobra Commander was broken out. I also liked how Cobra Commander was played.
I was distracted through the break out sequence by wishing so much that Storm Shadow's motorcycle-riding conspirator had been Baroness. I would have forgiven a lot if it had been Baroness and Storm Shadow working together. I don't even care how they explained it, I would have accepted anything. (Okay that's a lie - if they'd made her brainwashed again I would have been pissed.)
3) I liked the Roadblock/Duke friendship a lot. That was very well done. You really got a feel for how close the two of them were. Their two friendship scenes (the game playing and cupcake shooting) were added in later I believe and that was a really good decision.
And three (of the biggest) things I disliked:
1) The destruction of the G.I. Joe's and how it played out didn't work for me. For one thing I thought they were supposed to be a more international organisation based on the first movie and not just an American military unit? Was Duke the leader of that large troop of soldiers or was he supposed to be in charge of all the Joe's? Because I'm not buying the latter. What happened to General Hawk? We get told that our main four are the only Joe's left but I found that really hard to believe. What about that big main base from the first movie? Weren't any of the Joe's on other missions or on vacation? So all the other Joe's from the first movie are dead then?
2) Jinx as Storm Shadow's cousin. The idea of the character is great and I don't dislike her but they throw out that she's Storm Shadow's cousin and then they do absolutely nothing with that. We don't get any interaction between them unless you count the silent moment at the end when he passes her the sword. They didn't talk or have a confrontation scene, they don't fight... their relationship is non-existent and that really annoyed me. If they're going to throw in that whole 'cousin' thing they should have done something with it!
3) Cobra Commander not taking the weapon controlling briefcase with him when he made his escape. That made no sense. It was dumb.
