Superman Thoughts
Feb. 13th, 2014 07:51 pmAll Star Superman: I really enjoyed this. The art not so much; I'm not a fan. But the characterisation was pretty great. I love Superman in this. Just pretty much everything about how he's portrayed. I loved how Clark's clumsiness wasn't just part of his cover but a tool he used to save people. Lex Luthor was kind of delightful too and I enjoyed his interactions with Clark. His plan to defeat Superman was pretty great too. The weak part for me was actually Lois. I didn't dislike this version but something about her just felt - off?
Superman Birthright:
- I really liked Clark in this one too but I loved Lois. She was fabulous. She was just so perfectly Lois. I loved her interactions with both Clark and Superman. I loved that she was investigating Superman before there even was a superman and how she interacted with everyone around her. Perry White's keep/fire list was amusing.
- I really liked Clark's relationship with his parents and how that was portrayed. I loved how he and Martha write to each other. I liked how he created the Superman persona.
- I liked this version of Jimmy, though we got a lot less of him, more than the All Star version.
- I liked that Jor-El and Lara did receive the transmisson from Earth, and because of Lex's scheme, died knowing the Kal-El made it to safety and survived till adulthood (and was wearing the 's' symbol).
-I love the idea of Clark and Lex as childhood friends but how it was executed here didn't really work for me. I had a hard time understanding exactly why Clark was friends with this Lex. Yes, Clark thought that Lex understood him better than anyone but we don't actually get to see one of those moments of connection or really of them bonding or being friends at all. It's just Clark constantly reaching out to Lex. For 'friends' I need to see some reciprocation.
- I also didn't love this version of young Lex who was clearly pretty unstable and who was also weirdly oblivious about social cues/mores. Older Lex was more in line with what I'd expect and I enjoyed his scheme.
